My 2015 - Decemberists - What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World

The songs on What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, produced by long-time collaborator Tucker Martine, are more intimate and personal than some of the early Decemberists narrative songs. The band – Chris Funk (guitars), Jenny Conlee (keyboards), Nate Query (bass) and John Moen (drums) – offer instrumental class, as they weave around Meloy's voice, allowing the lyrics to express their intention and work their magic. This is never more true than on the standout track Till The Water is All Long Gone, a dreamy song that Maloy wrote on a child's guitar that his wife Carson Ellis (who illustrated the Wildwood trilogy) has kept since she was a kid. The melody and chord progression came out of casual strumming and the band help turn the composition into a marvellously groovy track. TUK
