H-Burns- The Greatest (Cat Power Cover) - 2014

H-BURNS – MIDLIFE - 2019

Qu’il a logiquement intitulé Mid Life.

Nada Surf - "Song For Congress" - 2019

"I've written a few political songs over the years but most of them have remained in a desk drawer unfinished - they're hard to write and can feel futile," says Nada Surf singer-guitarist Matthew Caws. "But when I read about the separation of families at the US-Mexico border, I felt compelled to try again. Like most people learning of the tragic situation there, I was outraged and upset. After calling the offices of my state representatives and leaving messages urging them to take some kind of action, I wished there was something more I could do. A thought occurred to me: what if I could speak directly to a congressperson or senator through a song? I knew that anyone on Capitol Hill actually hearing it was a moonshot, but I also knew that music can travel in unexpected ways and that it was at least worth trying."

Frankie Cosmos - Haunted Items #1 - #3 - 2019

Frontwoman Greta Kline says of the Haunted Items project: “items themselves are harmless unless they are infused with some kind of energy. These items are haunted by fear, consumerism, commitment, love, loss, the list goes on…I had some of these songs stuck inside me, mostly because I wrote a lot of them for piano and didn’t know how to record them, even as demos. My friend Elia gifted me with 10 hours of recording time with Mark Yoshizumi, and this winter felt like the perfect opportunity to get these out of my system and haunt you with them instead.

Papooz - Theatrical State of Mind - 2019

The band say of the new clip:
Once upon a time,
Ulysse le Sévère, the blood thirsty King of Burgundy invites a couple of twin minstrels to play music in his castle.
Just when you think you're safe...you're in more danger!
A french tale of revenge, lust & forgiveness

Armand & Ulysse (aka Papooz) met whilst bunking off literature studies at the Sorbonne to smoke weed in Paris' Luxembourg Gardens. The pair began working on demos of weird pop informed variously by Karen Dalton, The Beach Boys and The White Stripes, which became debut album 'Green Juice' (whose Soko-directed video for 'Ann Wants To Dance' has clocked over 13 million streams.

Warbly Jets - Propaganda - 2019

http://warblyjets.com/

“ ‘Propaganda’ is a term as much as it’s a cultural ethos that’s been widely accepted. Anything from advertisement to self-aggrandizement qualifies,” explains multi-instrumentalist Julien O’neill. “From social media, push notifications, targeted ads—we’ve openly elected to carry around miniature billboards, playing our part under the promising guise of a sense of ‘connection.’ We feel empty without it.”

Le Boom - Be There For You - 2019

“An intoxicating electropop track that celebrates those moments where life seems like it couldn't get any better” - Pop Matters

Speaking about the track, Leech says: “We played at Primavera in Barcelona last year. After our show we caught the end of Peggy Gou’s set on a small stage down near the beach, just as the sun was going down. It was probably a mixture of my post-show adrenaline comedown and Peggy’s class tunes but I found myself having a moment of ‘oh fuck, life is great’ - when I got home I decided to write a tune with a vibe that would remind me of that night.”

Unlikely Friends - We Blast Last! A Love Letter to the Fabulous Bands of the Pacific Northwest - 2019

Each week starting February 8 we'll release a digital "single" with covers of our favorite Pacific Northwest bands.

We've been recording these songs because it seemed like a fun thing to do, but also because these bands mean something to us. They’re the bands we listened to growing up, or the bands that those bands listened to. They’re the reason we scoured the all-ages show listings in The Rocket every month, and the reason some of us bought guitars and started our own bands. They’re the reason you can draw a straight line through 60 years of Pacific Northwest garage and punk from 1960 to today. Most of all, they just rock! And because imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, these are our love letters to them.

You can download them for free, but if you'd like to show your appreciation through name-your-price then we'll donate it to the Tacoma Humane Society.

Sincerely,
UF

Super Cassette, photo by Nicholas Troughton

Super Cassette is an Oakland garage-pop band built around the guitar and vocal harmonies of two brothers. The band formed when Max Gerlock assembled a group to play his solo project, Maximillian, live. Their first show went so well that it became obvious the project should be transitioned into a full-fledged band rather than a solo effort.

Hawksley Workman - 1983 - 2019

The modern day troubadour wrote and recorded his latest LP following a recent move from Northern Ontario to Montreal. This time around, collaborating closely with Murray in studios throughout his new home of Montreal, there’s no lipstick, literal or figurative – just the purity of loving, loathing, and living. With Median Age Wasteland he’s leading listeners through the figurative looking glass for as clear an image of his true self as we’ve ever been allowed.

“I’ve always had this constant hunger to innovate, reevaluate what I do, and keep remaking it to confuse myself and maybe confuse my audience,” Hawksley admits. “This time, I’m just committing to writing focused and honest songs, which feels like the most interesting thing I can do right now.”

pumpkin mouth - Tooth Salad - 2019

And so he did make weird beats and tracks, and he emailed them to jocelyn, who was in Florida at the time. She improvised melodies and lyrics in a process she fondly calls making "word salad," and emailed Guy back the raw improvisations she came up with. Guy listened to these odd song zygotes and typed up the words he THOUGHT he heard her singing. Then, he sent those lyrics back to Jocelyn who made no changes to his interpretations but did make some actual vocal parts out of the whole thing. None of the lyrics make any sense and most of them ended up about food and we like it like that.

The result is Forever Overhead, 11 timeless songs that are as connected to classic 70s songwriters like Harry Nilsson and Cat Stevens as it is maritime folk. Jacob Faurholt - Sad People - 2019

Sad People is a short collection of sparse, tense folk songs recorded live with a few overdubs in Faurholt’s home studio in Aarhus, Denmark. The recordings rough and mildly experimental character might bring early Bright Eyes or Will Oldham’s Palace Music to mind. Faurholt recorded and mixed the songs himself, in between his day job as a teacher, and spending time with his wife and 2-year-old daughter. In the end it was mastered by the Canadian producer Andy Magoffin (Great Lake Swimmers, Royal City).
