Violent Femmes • "I'm Nothing" feat. Stefan Janoski • 2019

"The twisted, quirky folk that's both innocent and defiant remains distinctive, as does singer Gordon Gano's perpetually strained, some might say fidgety, vocals...Strange, inexplicable and uncomfortable are descriptions the Femmes are likely proud of."
- American Songwriter

James Levy • What Do I Know • 2019

"There's just something in the timbre of James Levy's voice—it's rich like red wine and heady with nonchalance. If his voice were a stance, Levy would be leaning."

Cale Tyson • Fade Me Away • 2019

This collection marks Tyson’s first release since relocating from Nashville to Los Angeles. "Fade Me Away is probably the most uptempo song I've recorded in the past two years," explains Tyson. "It's basically me being bitter about someone wanting to be friends when I had more-than-friendly feelings for them. It's a request to be cut off instead of strung along."

"narcissist is an intimate, sad, and often inspiring 180. Raw and stripped down, it positions Tyson more as a descendant of Elliott Smith and early Bright Eyes than the twangster influences he's worn on his sleeve."

Iron & Wine • Live At Third Man Records • 2019

Armed with spartan set-up of a guitar, microphone and his minimal backing band in front of a sold-out audience, Iron & Wine's Sam Beam ambled through his discography during this set, on touchstones like "Naked As We Came" from classic album Our Endless Numbered Days, "The Trapeze Swinger" from Around the Well and "Winter Prayers" from Ghost on Ghost. It was a heartfelt experience without sacrificing any charm, personality or gestalt crowd connection.

Ducks Unlimited • "Get Bleak" • 2019

With a sound that draws on the 80's jangle-pop of Flying Nun and Sarah Records, artists such as The Go-Betweens, Field Mice and The Chills, 'Get Bleak' thematically pokes fun at the notion that moving from a city will instantly fix your problems, giving a particular nod towards London, Toronto or New York where rising prices help hurry the move.

"A jaunty slice of C86 indie-pop" - Paste

"A cracking slice of strummy goodness" - Brooklyn Vegan

Mons Vi • Come On Violet • 2019

A relatively simple arrangement serves the foundation for elevating the emotionality of “Come On Violet.” Primarily supported by an acoustic guitar nestled away in the recesses of the track, Mons Vi’s vocals, as beautiful and delicate as a butterfly’s wings, holds the listener spellbound with heart-rending lyrics akin to poetry.

It's been a little too long to be biding my time,
searching around between bottles of wine.
And the call of the wild,
somehow gets lost in the dark of your eyes.

Come on, Violet,
Come on, Violet.

Spin on a beam at the top of the moon,
run through old scenes that once felt brand new.
You never notice the things you lose.
Could it wake the fear in you?

Come on, Violet,
Come on, Violet.
I'm alone.

Frog • Count Bateman • 2019

On their latest eclectic and emotional outing, there’s hints of the Carole King’s ‘70s pop, Jonathan Richman’s earnest eccentricity, Ned Doheny’s white boy funk, Greg Dulli’s lust, the Meat Puppets’ bastardized Americana and the wild wit and narrow self-control of The Silver Jews.

"A safer bet there’s never been – this record is essential." - GoldFlakePaint

“Imagine the euphoric pop of Small Wonder getting caught in a time warp to the wild west with Modest Mouse’s ‘Satin in a Coffin’ and you just about scratch the surface.” - DIY Mag

“I was taken aback by its apparent simplicity; a simplicity that at first masked a wealth of subtle nuances, wry homages, and nostalgic narratives that were enough to make listeners lament growing up anywhere other than suburban America” – The Line of Best Fit

“Utterly brilliant...they make you nostalgic for memories you never had and take you back to places you’ve never before been.” - London in Stereo

“Frog returns and is alive with tales of sadness, hysteria and delusions. Though the narratives are ambiguous and chimerical, each feel personal and poignant. The cult of Frog will only get bigger.” – Cereal & Sounds

“Locked between the unstoppable force of self-deprecation & the immovable object of the American Dream.” Various Small Flames

“Frog continue to exist outside of musical fads and trends, a welcome moment of quiet contemplation in the sometimes hectic modern world, a subtle, stunning triumph.”For the Rabbits

Rah Rah • Good Winter • 2014

We never go drunk tobogganin' anymore
I'm still a man, but gettin' home
and passin' out on the floor
We used to wake up every mornin' so sore
and then we meet up for brunch
at a quarter til' four
I remember we were datin' those two friends
even though we were both really in love
with just the one of them
We're sayin' "parents" like I'd never done before
We meet up to start drinkin'
like it was a chore
And darlin', I don't intend to live in the past
And I'm hopin' this notalgia will eventually pass
It's so strange how certain memories
they just last, they just last, they just last
That was a good winter
That was a good winter
We used to go skatin' every other day
Slap in time to chatter
I was Lefleurs, you were Messier
Then we would all huddle close in the bars
Stay til' closin'
then get back in our cars
And darlin, ain't it crazy just how fast
the moments of your life become your past
and it's so strange how certain memories
they just last, they just last, they just last
That was a good winter
That was a good winter
I haven't seen that old gang in a while
But I don't really need to
I've got a new life now
I work on my songs and I love my girl
Still slam a few cold ones on a Tuesday
after a curl!
That was a good winter (that was a good winter)
That was a good winter (that was a good winter)

Isnaj Dui • Primes and Squares • 2019

Being a bookkeeper by trade my immediate starting point for the 77 project was to have a look on Wikipedia for anything interesting about the number 77. Turns out it’s quite an intriguing number, made up of the first 8 prime numbers, or the squares of 4, 5 and 6. Primes and Squares is divided up into three main sections of 16, 25 and 36 minutes, as well as smaller sections of 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 and 19 minutes which results in a meet up between the two at 41 minutes.

"Off-piste slacker jams that veer between Pavement-style lyrical abstraction and PNK SLM's woozy pop, the band have already crafted a strong local following" – Clash

“90s-influenced guitar-pop brilliance” – Dork

Monkey (Cheetah) • The Be Positives • 2019

New single here from Manchester-based self-affirming mad-pop outfit THE BE POSITIVES – ‘Monkey (Cheetah)’

THE BE POSITIVES is a northern conundrum. It features two members from Slovenly Records garage-rock outfit Proto Idiot, who’ve found support from Dork, Loud And Quiet, Louder Than War and VICE.

Of the same vein as fellow up-and-comers Cut Worms, but filled with Lemon Twigs-esque intoxicants, the mad-pop debut ‘Monkey (Cheetah)’ was written during a Harry Nilsson binge, while the quartet were learning songs from the original ‘The Jungle Book’ film for a kids’ party.

THE BE POSITIVES is a northern conundrum. Consisting of Mike Seal (Guitar, Piano & Vocals), Rob Hatton (Bass & Vocals), Simon Mayne (Lead Guitar & Vocals) and Callum Darley (Drums & Vocals), they were splayed across Merseyside to Sheffield, all sharing an affinity for McCartney, Dylan, Kinks and Nick Lowe, and later, moving to Manchester, all hankering for gigging at grotty pubs across the city. Now united, the four-piece invoke mad-pop affirmation through berserk instrumentation laced with smart lyricism.
