Frog • GROG • 2023

Eclectic and wildly creative, this fully realized LP veers from the gorgeous grooving funk of “Black on Black on Black” to the classic pop of“Maybelline” before “New Ro” exemplifies the “gothic and cartoonish” characteristics that songwriter Daniel Bateman describes his latest work with.

VARSITY • Cowboy Killer • 2023

You're the real thing

Big boots and diamond rings

Hypnotical legs

You said what up babe

You pulled up right

The only cowboy for miles

800 degrees

In your mirror ball gaze

You used to say

On the open road today

There are no shortcuts or heartaches

Hashimoto • That Would Be You • 2022

You will always be
A true fighter for the sea
You help us understand
What we need to help the land

The coolest person ever
To sit on a St-Viateur terrace
That would be you, always you
The groovy shades
The clothes you made
The smile that feels like Saturday

It killed me every time
It killed me every time
You pronounced B-u-t-t-o-n-s
I miss it

One time we got to be
Music Circle King and Queen
We sang Daniel Lanois’ Stormy Sky
I hold that memory tight
I hold that memory high

Who’s that on the bike?
A damn cool rock star
Korg in the basket
You’re a star of Mile End
Fighter for the planet
You’re its excellent friend

It’s a certainty
You will always be
The coolest person on St-Viateur
That would be you
Always you

Burn The Louvre • Alison (feat. Stephanie Deshane) • 2022

"Alison" is a fun indie pop duet featuring singer/songwriter Stephanie Deshane. It's about that person who comes into your life and leaves very suddenly, but I'd like to think that a girl like "Alison" always leaves on a positive note. The moral of the story is that just because an interaction or relationship might be temporary, that doesn't mean that it can't be meaningful.

Advance Base • Little Sable Point Lighthouse • 2022

For the weekend
that Elise turned 28
she booked a motel room
on the Michigan side of the lake
with her boyfriend CJ
a couple miles down the way
from Little Sable Point Lighthouse

They went swimming
drank beer & watched TV
but on the second night
CJ couldn't sleep
so he snuck out with her keys
& drove the Cherokee
out to see the lighthouse

Staring up at the tower
watching the big light spin
hypnotized by the silver beam
that cut right through the dim
that's how Elise imagined him
he was never seen again

Years later
in Michigan again
for the second wedding
of an old school friend
Elise & her husband
happen by
Little Sable Point Lighthouse

Just a ghost now
decommissioned some time before
it had been the site
of endless imagined horror
but with a calm that surprised her
Elise parked the car
& walked out to see the lighthouse

Staring up at the tower
that now stood dark
surrounded by the quiet
of Silver Lake State Park
Elise squinted at the scene
she remembered from her dreams

ratbath • fairy forts • 2021

written in paris, france
recorded on an iphone

black sack, the faces pass on the train
big grin, he’s lost in sin-mple pleasures shamed
you’re new, so new to this place
but just a few towns away

you are oddly-sorted
fairy forts and banshees call your name
newgrange, the causeway
a giant's claim to fame

speck of dust, you must recall your home
corpses at wakes, triscoll and fairy forts
we sat in class and I got a vision of a sash
covered in blood and stairs go up and up and up

I heard the words
you explained the same red round of fabric lost in pain
the steps, a death and bullets into legs
I spoke in poems, takes a brave one to say

the classroom was so grey I could never dip into my astral supply
this time, loosened the shine
talk of tier na nog untwined our minds
we cry at different things but we’re inside an orb of pain
it’s black and hard, our limbs are shards
there’s always fairy forts

Gem Club • Spirit & Decline • 2021

hushed among the bells
the arrow struck your shoulder
forced to the ground
with the shredded pulp
of red apples

and you're near
your hands are touching hands
and you're near
the violence swells with its song
i am starting to lose focus
the distance in decline
while i'm watching your spirit

rise

watched for the point
when you'd wake from it
with the sun against your back

Even from my good side
I don't look right

I hate where my mind goes
Half of the time
Guess we all get older now
I don't wanna be here if you're not
I'll remember you
You said

Spilt Milk • A Drinking Song • 2021

We were asked by the Groninger Museum to make a song with a painting from their collection in mind. Giorgio Morandi's still life with his familiar glasses and bottles stood out, because of its subtlety and repetitiveness. Qualities we felt at ease with. We don't know what's inside the bottles. It could be milk, could be wine, could be nothing. Yeat's 'A Drinking Song' turned out to complete the song perfectly.

A Drinking Song - William Butler Yeats

Wine comes in at the mouth
And love comes in at the eye;
That's all we shall know for truth
Before we grow old and die.
I lift the glass to my mouth,
I look at you, and I sigh.

A hundred days of endless rain
Compounded by relentless gray
I can’t distinguish between the day
A hundred days of endless rain
Compounded by relentless gray
I can’t distinguish between the day

What happens when the rain
What happens when the rain
What happens when the rain won’t end

Tyler Burkhart • Only Yesterday • 2021

Only yesterday
I was just a kid
Never thought I’d grow at all
but then one day I did

Who can help but turn
into someone else?
I don’t wanna spend my life
tryin to figure out myself

Who would wanna be
a celebrity?
people follow you around
but there’s nothing much to see

See your name in lights
in flourescent bulbs
I don't wanna get so high
that I’d be afraid to fall

Called you up to say
I had that dream again
can’t remember how it starts
but this is how it ends
