Neutral Milk Hotel - Live (King's Arms, Auckland, New Zealand 2001)

Genre: Indie

In anticipation of Jeff Magnus' live 2011 tour, I dug up this live performance from 2001 recorded in New Zealand. The quality is great and the emotion even better! Fabled to be one of Jeff's greatest shows and last… Until Now!

The Story of LOW (1993 to 2011)

Genre:
Slowcore / Indie

Low plays music for sub-basements. Most of the songs on this album sound as if they arise from somewhere deep below the floor and although they reach upwards, never are able to free themselves from the hole they’ve been trapped in. The percussion is sparse and minimalist, the guitar is gentle with barely a hint of hope, the bass is sub-terranean and the vocal harmonies endlessly haunt the soundscape. ”I Could Live in Hope” (1994), their first album, makes me feel like I’m driving alone in the dark on a desert highway and dawn is barely peaking over the horizon. The endless space is silent with the sounds of Low.

Screen Saver Mix 2011

Genre: Indie Pop / Indie Rock / Shoegaze / lo-fi / Experimental

Recently I was talking with a friend about the first half of 2011 music scene; what a year it has been and we are barely half way through. I have assembled a small offering from a small quantity of superb bands creating some tantalizing tunes in 2011. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed assembling it! It is entitled screen saver to save you from your screens; Listen to some music for awhile.

Indie Covers sIx [2011]

Genre: Indie Pop, Experimental, Electronica

A good cover has a responsibility to fulfill; add to the intent of the song without fuckin' it up! Find a place that has yet to be seen, yet still nurturing the seed of the song. The sixth instalment has some great original songs covered by some great modern artists with indie intent and experimentation, resulting in a pretty fine listen.

The Smiles And Frowns [2011]

Genre: lo-fi folk acoustic

The Smiles and Frowns have been enjoying favorable and apt comparisons to such psych-folk architects as Syd Barrett and White Album era Beatles in the year or so since the release of their debut self-titled album.  The Phoenix, AZ duo themselves describe their sound as:…a bit of a mix.  There are haunted train ride songs, and children’s theme music songs, psychedelic science fiction songs etc. I guess it’s mostly just a collection of experiments in sound, patterns, and melodies… nN

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mine [2011]

Genre: Indie Folktronica
I've loved King Creosote for a goodly long while now, so imagine our delight when we found out he was teaming up with electronic whizz Jon Hopkins to make Diamond Mine. Featuring old (but unheard) Kenny Anderson songs delivered atop Hopkins's Eno-esque classical backdrops, this is a project done for the love of it and nothing else. How could you explain a series of songs that have been seven years in the making? So GooD… LIsTEN!
