ifitbeyourwill S06E03 • Field Medic

Kevin Patrick Sullivan, the creative force behind Field Medic, invites us into the intimate world of his songwriting process in this revealing conversation about musical authenticity, vulnerability, and the realities of life as a touring musician. From his early days performing solo with just a boombox playing cassette drum beats to his current evolution as an artist, Sullivan offers a refreshingly honest look at his creative journey.

"Touring is a 24-hour job where you only work for one hour," Sullivan reflects, capturing the strange dichotomy of performing life – moments of intense connection with audiences followed by the disorienting reality of being "somewhere random" immediately after. This vulnerability extends throughout his music, where he's discovered that the lyrics making him most uncomfortable often resonate most deeply with listeners.

What makes Sullivan's approach particularly fascinating is his disciplined creative routine combined with moments of pure inspiration. He practices what he calls "full-time freestyle," sometimes capturing songs in single, inspired moments, while other times meticulously crafting them over time. "I work on music or songwriting for at least an hour every day, even when I don't want to," he shares, explaining his prolific output with a new album nearly every year.

His latest record, "Surrender Instead," continues his tradition of heart-on-sleeve songwriting while navigating the tension between artistic authenticity and desire for recognition. As Sullivan prepares for his upcoming tour and already begins writing his next project, his philosophy remains steadfast: focus on the feeling rather than technical perfection, stay true to yourself, and don't get too caught up in the small stuff. For anyone who values authentic creative expression or simply enjoys thoughtful, vulnerable songwriting, Field Medic's music offers a welcome reminder that sometimes the most powerful art comes from sharing our most uncomfortable truths.

Field Medic • "i had a dream that you died" • 2022

Few songwriters are able to pinpoint difficult emotions and address them with such devastating clarity and disarming humor quite like Field Medic. The long-running musical project of Los Angeles-based musician Kevin Patrick Sullivan, he makes music that’s so startlingly honest that it can cut the tension in any room. He’s excelled at self-reflection and making deceptively simple folk songs about loneliness, sobriety, and growing up. But for his latest LP, grow your hair long if you're wanting to see something you can change, which is out October 14 via Run For Cover, Sullivan decided to completely reinvent his approach to recording. The result is his most ambitious, fully-formed, and emotionally resonant collection of tracks yet.

Eight new slow-burning songs branch forth from idiosyncratic country folk blues, sung with sibylline wit and a hint of the absurd, awash in sensually anachronic lyricism.

Best of 2019 • Field Medic • used 2 be a romantic

“Used 2 Be a Romantic” is the second advance track from Fade Into the Dawn, following its stellar lead single “Henna Tattoo,” which we highlighted as our Daily Dose upon its release. Where “Henna Tattoo” was concerned with the anxiety and uncertainty surrounding a tenuous romantic connection, “Used 2 Be a Romantic” finds Patrick coping with other problems: the everyday stresses of being a touring musician. “I used to be a romantic / now I’m a dude in a laminate,” Patrick laments, looking back on a show gone wrong (“Those fuckers talked over my whole set”). The singer-songwriter resolved to quit drinking while recording his new album, only to return to it halfway through a particularly grueling run of shows, an uphill battle manifested by lines from “Used 2 Be a Romantic” like, “I can’t see shit, I’m blinded by the light / I swore that I quit but I need a drink tonight.” It’s an honest look at how hard and dehumanizing the daily grind can be—a reminder that artists are also just people.

I need a cigarette
Those fuckers talked over my whole set
But I don't have any time to reflect
I gotta sell some shirts to try and make the rent

pumpkin mouth - Tooth Salad - 2019

And so he did make weird beats and tracks, and he emailed them to jocelyn, who was in Florida at the time. She improvised melodies and lyrics in a process she fondly calls making "word salad," and emailed Guy back the raw improvisations she came up with. Guy listened to these odd song zygotes and typed up the words he THOUGHT he heard her singing. Then, he sent those lyrics back to Jocelyn who made no changes to his interpretations but did make some actual vocal parts out of the whole thing. None of the lyrics make any sense and most of them ended up about food and we like it like that.

Inspired by precious lost moments with family members, the death of loved ones, and the loss of wide eyed hopeful machinations, this album follows the torment and turbulence of the simple mantra “we all grow up” but at times this is not always an easy process to live through.

Top Songs of 2014: Andrew Jackson Jihad - Getting Naked, Playing with Guns

AJJ writes the most outrageous lyrics to, at times very sweet acoustic melodies - in this case this is what got my attention with this track in particular off his latest release, Christmas Island. The common "man" speaks in inferences, as he takes on modern twists happening in the 21st century woe. Fairly linear song that is catapulted to new heights with this playfully depressing look at ourselves and our fall from grace.

Getting naked and playing with guns
there's a gerbil in the microwave, a baseball bat in everyone
sharing kisses and building a bomb
we'll set it off like Microsoft in 94
we'll set it off like Microsoft in 94

McDonald's play place before the xbox
cake frosting sweet talking bedroom wall
covered in knives, touching god, burning shit
we'll make a wish and take a trip to future town like our daddy did
and we'll kill the neighbor kid who only wants to be our friend
his dad is dead enough that his new dad can cure the bends
we'll make a wish and take a trip to future town
feeling weird yet tasting sweet
its a top bottom rock smoking magic mask making it bleed
feeling sweet, getting weird
now I can se the playgorund from the trees
and i can see the playgrond from the trees

and we'll show the neighbor kid what
what our love actually means
he's here from out of town and I heard he's got ADD
we'll climb the tallest branch with a rifle full of dreams
and we'll blow the little dickhead up to smitherines

Getting naked and playing with guns
there's a gerbil in the microwave, a baseball bat in everyone
sharing kisses and building a bomb
we'll set it off like microsoft in 94
we'll set it off like Microsoft in 94 in our backyard
