These Bashful Claws - Everything, All at Once - 2016
These Bashful Claws is the project of Charlie O’Neil from Fort Collins’ Colorado. His new album, Everything, All at Once, came out at the beginning of April. O’Neil also plays in WTD favs Gleemer (Corey Coffman mixed the album), and the bands share certain similarities, at least as much to say that if you like Gleemer then you should be sure to check out These Bashful Claws. Ladyhawke - Wild Things - 2016
Brown’s conviction to authenticity led her on a journey starting in 2013. Over three years, she scrapped a full Ladyhawke album (“The material didn’t feel like me. It felt too dark or something”). Once reliant on alcohol to surmount social anxiety (“I’d never done a sober show in my life until last December”), she quit drinking and focused on getting healthy. Then she welcomed that newfound clarity by crafting her latest release, the blissed-out Wild Things.
“I think I went even more synthy and poppy this time around,” Brown says of the buoyant Wild Things. “I feel good for the first time in 10 years. I actually have a clear mind! I have a wife. I feel stable. That is what I’m celebrating.”
Looks Like Mountains - quick, before we're all dead! - 2016
Looking like a mountain doesn’t make you a mountain and, as such, just as this little gem of a record might appear somewhat faint and skeletal on first, second, third listen it doesn’t make it so. In fact, for all the slightness of its initial demeanour, the record grows and grows with repeated listens, slowly transforming in to a hardy and brilliantly robust collection of songs.
The project of Jack Mohr, ‘Quick, Before We’re All Dead‘ is a tender piece of guitar pop, small little figurines that are brought to life with the added instrumentation that often creeps in and, more pertinently, by the sheer strength of its convictions. Mohr’s grainy voice is like a drunken stumble through the dark; not particular steady but always fully aware of where it’s intending to reach. In much the same way, the album is extremely fleeting, eight songs all under three minutes, many half that, which tend to consume you for the moments they exist before suddenly departing, leaving but a little a glow of recognition somewhere in the back of your mind.
From the burned-out ‘twining‘ to the more solid frameworks of the eminently pretty ‘waiting to tell you‘ and the Trust Fund-like strut of closing track ‘everything is ok‘, Looks Like Mountain’s have crafted an odd but wonderfully endearing record here, and while it might last for only the briefest of flashes, it’s certainly one that will linger in the memory of those that got to see it. golfflakepaint

Stanley Brinks and The Kaniks - Turtle Dove - 2016
Following the albums Gin and My Ass recorded with The Wave Pictures in un-gentrified East London, Stanley Brinks (aka André Herman Dune) returns with a new collaborative album, this time with the Norwegian folk collective The Kaniks as his backing band.
Eschewing a traditional recording studio, André took The Kaniks to a remote island outside the small town of Egersund in south west Norway. Over the course of week of midnight sun, midnight swims and midnight beers on their isolated rocky island, living and recording in the only building on the island, the (now un-manned) mid 19th century Vibberodden lighthouse, Stanley Brinks and The Kaniks recorded three albums of material; Turtle Dove is the first of those three to be released.
Brinks is renowned for his unique antifolk style: both playful and suggestive, insightful and entertaining. His fondness for calypso and the unusual provide the perfect foil to The Kaniks’, whose folk instrumentation and country and bluegrass influences take these 12 songs to a joyous place Brinks hasn’t been before in his extensive back catalogue.
Tancred - Out of the Garden - 2016
Though technically the band’s third full-length, Out of the Garden is Tancred’s first truly cohesive record: a mission statement that underscores the “power” in power-pop and is punctuated by lyrics as razor-sharp as the hooks.
Written over a two-year period during a break from touring, the album’s emphasis on re-defining feminine expectations was shaped by primary songwriter Jess Abbott’s experiences living in Minneapolis and working at a liquor store in a rough part of town.

Blue Jeans - Songs Are Easy - 2016
Once known as Santa Monica Swim And Dive Club, Blue Jeans are led by Tim Sendra, who elder indiepoppers will recognize as the one of the forces behind Veronica Lake in the early 90s. Whereas that band was known for their songs being shrouded in layers of fuzz, Blue Jeans are a much cleaner affair, with relatively straightforward pop songs that occasionally border on bubblegum. In addition to the songwriting of Tim, we also have the production and general hands-on-ness of Fred Thomas from the very like-minded Saturday Looks Good To Me, giving things a perfect pop polish. These ten exciting songs may only last about half an hour, but they will likely fuel your entire summer!

Mitski - Puberty 2 - 2016
In terms of message though, the 25-year-old cuts the same defiant, feminist figure on 'Puberty 2' that won her acclaim last time around (her hero is MIA, for her politics as much as her music). Born in Japan, Mitski grew up surrounded by her father's Smithsonian folk recordings and mother's 1970s Japanese pop CDs in a family that moved frequently: she spent stints in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malaysia, China and Turkey among other countries before coming to New York to study composition at SUNY Purchase. She reflects now on feeling “half Japanese, half American but not fully either” – a feeling she confronts on the clever 'Your Best American Girl' – a super-sized punk-rock hit she “hammed up the tropes” on to deconstruct and poke fun at that genre's surplus of white males. “I wanted to use those white-American-guy stereotypes as a Japanese girl who can't fit in, who can never be an American girl,” she explains.
Hater - Radius [EP] - 2016
Led by Landahl's impressive vocals, Hater offers up a sound equally influenced by current day indie pop stalwarts like Alvvays, The Radio Dept. and Melody's Echo Chamber as by classic acts like Violent Femmes, Neil Young and The Pretenders. The debut EP Radius is due on July 8 via Stockholm's PNKSLM Recordings with the band set to head into the studio this summer to record the debut LP, which is due later this year.

Darren Hayman - Thankful Villages Volume 1 - 2016
A Thankful Village is a village where every soldier returned alive from World War I. The writer, journalist and educator Arthur Mee coined the term ‘Thankful Village’ in his series of guidebooks, The King’s England in the 1930s. Darren Hayman visited each of the 54 Thankful Villages and, focussing on village life, made a piece of music and a short film for every one. Some take the form of instrumentals inspired by the location, some are interviews with village residents set to music, others are new songs with lyrics or found local traditional songs.
