Jason Lytle • NYLONANDJUNO • 2020

On July 27, 2019 Jason Lytle came to Dallas to be a part of Good Records grand opening of their new location. The event took place a few weeks before the release of Arthur King Presents Jason Lytle: NYLONANDJUNO, an experimental album and Lytle’s first new solo LP release in more than 7 years. 

The store borrowed a piano from the recording studio next door and captured a night to remember with a one-man director/editor/cameraman powerhouse named Steven Gaddis (Live From The Astroturf, Alice Cooper/Cacophony! Cinematic Aural Revue Film Festival). Chris Penn, the store’s co-owner began brainstorming potential fundraising opportunities to help keep the store afloat while its brick and mortar operations have ceased due to COVID-19. He remembered that the footage had been shot but not edited of Jason Lytle’s performance. He got Steven to put it together so he could pitch to Jason Lytle who graciously agreed to its release as a way to help out the store.  

The show is an amazing 14 song career-spanning retrospective of Grandaddy and Jason Lytle solo material that clocks in at one hour ten minutes. The film will be making its debut this Saturday (and be available whilst Good Records is temporarily closed) via Vimeo On Demand. "The Seeker" is Cloud Cult's newest album, released February 12, 2016. The album features 13 new Cloud Cult songs including the radio singles "No Hell", "Through the Ages", and "Days to Remember". It debuted on the college radio charts at #4 (Most Adds) and Entertainment Weekly calls it a "must listen".

"The Seeker" is also a feature length film due out in late 2016, written by Cloud Cult and directed by Jeff D. Johnson. The film stars Alex McKenna and Josh Radnor, and the music is written and performed by Cloud Cult. "The Seeker" is a story of Grace, a daughter whose idyllic life is turned upside-down by immense tragedy.  As she grows older, her cynicism and apathy towards her new reality is challenged by a reminder from the past that sets her on a pilgrimage that will define her.  

Somewhere between poignant and funny, where good advice, mythology and laughter all seem to collide, The Seeker finds that acceptance and love offer the real answer. Throughout, the troupe pair twanging banjo with dainty piano, cello with percussion and anthemic chants with rhythmic clapping while laying out their uplifting message. exlaim!

"Rudderless - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (14 songs; 37 min.) packs a LOT of music in a short amount of time. Basically, you can divide up the soundtrack into three groups: first there is the music brought by Billy Crudup's character and/or his band Rudderless; then there is the mostly instrumental and most short tunes brought as intermezzos by Eef Barzelay; and then there is "the rest". Of course it's the Crudup/Rudderless tunes that carry the weight of the movie, and hence get the closest scrutiny. I was surprised how strong Crudup's voice is, check out the opener "Home", but even better yet, check out the soundtrack's (and also movie's) closer, "Sing Along", which he brings with full emotion. I admit it got the best of me as I was watching it on the big screen. Rudderless isn't named after a Lemonheads song by coincidence. Rudderless goes after a similar vibe, check out "Beautiful Mess" and later "Wheels on The Bus", starting out deceivingly slow and then simply exploding. (It makes for a great scene in the movie.) As to "the rest" of the soundtrack, there is an appearance from none other than Ben Kweller at the open mic night in the movie, and that song "Hold On" is included here (I don't know why Selena Gomez is on here, she plays a small if slightly bizarre role in the movie but was not featured on this song). Rounding out things is Ben Limpic. Bottom line: "Rudderless" is a great soundtrack, full of heartfelt performances.

Jason says.... 

I was asked by an old pal of mine (Mike Cloward-exec producer of the film) if I wanted to do some music for a film about long distance running. I said ‘yep’ … and knew I would be able to get into it when I realized it wasn’t so much about overly sporty/jockish types and their stringent diets and training regimens….but more about the epic journey your mind and body takes when embarking on a very long and arduous journey. 

Ive dabbled a bit with running long distances myself….completing a handful of 50k mountain running races and even a 50 miler in the Bighorn mountains of Wyoming…..so needless to say I was able to tap into the subject and the stories of the characters…and use some of my own understanding of what it takes to push through levels of pain and doubt and borderline insanity to finally reaching a goal of finishing with mind and body still kinda intact. 

This was also a nice opportunity to work with my dear friend Aaron Espinoza….just basically hanging out in his studio…discussing themes, drinking some beers,moving from instrument to instrument and hitting record ….over the course of a week. 

After a few more weeks of tweaking sounds and adding/subtracting stuff … Aaron got it all mixed and we realized we had an interesting little batch of (mostly) instrumental music that was composed for this film. 

So now here we are …..with the bright idea of making it available as an album…of sorts.

Marathon runners are an amazing bunch…Ultra-Marathon runners are in a class all their own. The level of athleticism that it takes to run 100 miles is without question…astonishing. 

But for me…the most interesting part of Ultra Marathon running is the mental side. The ability to transcend all of the highs and lows that go hand in hand in this endeavor. Equal parts triumph, beauty, darkness and just plain ol’ weird shit… It is truly an incredible feat! 

I think Jason and I tapped into a bit of all these feelings in the soundtrack. I love working with Jason…and I really think we made something cool. Hope you dig it too! ae

Damon & Naomi - Fortune - 2015

Naomi Yang and Damon Krukowski have been performing together for the better part of 30 years, yet in that time music has never been the sole focus of their creative energies. Damon is a poet and writer (and an occasional Pitchfork contributor) while Naomi is a photographer and graphic designer whose visual design skills have always been an integral part of the duo’s work, dating back to her album designs for their beloved group Galaxie 500. In addition to operating the 20/20/20 record label and Exact Change small press, in recent years Naomi has branched out into directing stylish and evocative music videos for such artists as Marissa Nadler, Julia Holter, and Elisa Ambrogio.

So it seems like a very organic progression that Naomi has now directed Fortune, her first short film. Though the film itself is silent, it arrives paired with a full-length soundtrack of new songs by Damon & Naomi, which can give it the essential feel of a 30-minute music video. The film and its music, naturally enough, work best in combination and enjoying them together (currently available for free) is an experience well worth the half-hour devotion of your time and attention. As is often the case the film itself feels incomplete without its musical accompaniment, whereas the soundtrack does function as a short but coherent and satisfying stand-alone collection of songs. PF
