On A Wave Goes Wild is part acoustic with added electric guitar flair. “It’s the most raw and unedited thing I’ve ever put out,” Monks said in a statement. “Is it an acoustic EP? To me, it’s more of ‘Live from the studio’ — the way we would perform if we were ‘on air’ at a radio station.”

Best of 2019 • Siskiyou • Not Somewhere
Siskiyou returns from a four-year hiatus with Not Somewhere, an album that finds band leader Colin Huebert (ex-Great Lake Swimmers) essentially in solo artist mode, writing and self-recording this new collection of tunes on his own, playing all the guitar, bass, keyboard and drum parts himself. Not Somewhere harkens back to Siskiyou’s magical and understated 2010 self-titled debut in this and other ways: the album’s production rekindles a homespun intimacy, where plain-spoken lyrics grapple with portraits of quiet quotidian despair, fragile existential horizon lines separating perseverance and defeatism, honest and unremarkable lives trapped in cultures of false consciousness, impossible desire, self-analysis and self-medication. Though Huebert evidences stewing in his own juices a bit too long a’la Syd Barrett, the music takes a shaggier turn. ‘The End II/Song of Joy’ in all its acoustic majesty jumps straight from the softer moments of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. While the anthemic build of ‘Unreal Erections/Severed Heads’ adds in stately horns at the end to elevate the song over its subject of being “22nd Century poor”. Several years on from its recording Huebert was not only prescient at the time, but he would also likely be more disgusted today with humanity’s further surrender to technology. If the album has a signature song, it's most likely ‘Nothing Disease’, though the song’s lovely chorus overcomes the pathos of the song. Even the ragged shamble of ‘Her Aim Is Tall’ has a tuneful thread to it. SBlab

Burkini Beach - Supersadness Intl. - 2017
The arrangements on "Supersadness Intl." are deliberately meager and instrumentation is kept sparse. „I wanted to avoid falling into the kitsch trap at all costs“, says Maier. „With singer-songwriter / acoustic-guitar-stuff it's always a thin line between cheesy and okay.“ In this case, a claustrophobic gem emerged, which is reminiscent of genre heroes like Elliott Smith, Mark Kozelek or Sufjan Stevens. "Supersadness Intl." is an atmospherically dense work of sometimes painful intensity, which Maier, however, can always break open with mischievous pleasure and with the use of textual and musical pointers.

Alex G - Beach Music - 2015
Over the course of six self-recorded and mostly self-released LPs, Alex G has built a body of work unassuming in its presentation but astounding in its depth. Beach Music, his seventh full-length and his debut with Domino, was written and recorded in Giannascoli’s apartment between the Fall of 2014 and the Spring of 2015, during breaks from touring with the likes of Elvis Depressedly, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and Gardens & Villa. While its predecessors often came in uninterrupted bursts—from his head to the internet in a matter of hours and days—Beach Music was shaped in part by Giannascoli adapting to life as a touring musician. Songs were written within months of one another rather than all at once, with influences ranging from noise music to piano-based laments to Southern rock to the rhythmic focus of techno—whatever he happened to be most interested in at the time. The result is Giannascoli’s most cohesive and beautiful work to date; a stand-out addition to a catalog whose rewards continue to evolve and multiply with every listen.

"Us" is a record as my sister says "is sensitive not sad." Bosque Brown is me and whoever is in my life at the time. Once it was me and four others.. Once it was me and my husband... Once it was just me. Now it's just my sister and I. "Us" is about relationship. The relationship I have with myself and with others. It was written over the course of several years where I was working very hard alone in my home. A time of mental and physical health issues ending in total healing and renewal after having my first child who is now 10 months old.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy & broeder Dieleman - Split 7" - 2015
In 2014 Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and broeder Dieleman played a tour together, consisting of eight fully acoustic shows spread throughout the Netherlands. The tour was sold out within an hour, and plenty of reason for both artists to do a follow-up.
The result was a split 7" for Record Store Day 2015. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy is regarded as an inspiration for, and is praised by, many great international recording artists. His songs have previously been covered by the likes of Johnny Cash and Mark Lanegan. For this 2015 RSD release he translated 'Gloria' by broeder Dieleman into English. Broeder Dieleman covered Oldham's Three Questions in Zealandic dialect.

Tall Tall Trees - The Seasonal EP - 2014
Mike Savino is not your grandaddy’s banjo player, and Tall Tall Trees is definitely not your average indie-folk outfit from NYC. Savino has released two records on his own start-up label Good Neighbor Records, Tall Tall Trees (2009), and moment (2012), and has toured extensively, mystifying audiences with his innovative banjo technique.
