“‘this little lighter of mine’ is a title I brought into a write with Josh Lovell and Hank Compton,” shares Cone. “I wanted to put an edgy, cheeky twist on the traditional children's hymn, ‘This Little Light of Mine.’ Ultimately, this song is about vices. We’ve all got 'em and need something to take the edge off every now and then, because life is hard sometimes.”

Great Lake Swimmers • "Promise Of Spring” • 2023

Great Lake Swimmers release another video from their newest album, Uncertain Country (Harbour Songs / Fontana), with “Promise Of Spring.” The video, “was shot at the Silver Spire church in St. Catharines, Ontario, and is a peak behind the curtain at the recording sessions that took place in early December 2020. Although the song itself would take a few major twists and turns, the bed tracks were done live-off-the-floor, wearing masks and practicing social distancing in the middle stages of the pandemic, which at that point still had no end in sight. I love how you can really feel the room in this song,” says lead singer and songwriter, Tony Dekker.

Paul & The Tall Trees • So Long • 2019
Paul Schalda is a poet, perhaps a bit of a tortured soul, a hopeless romantic, and a guy from Staten Island. That last bit might not make sense to people who aren’t from New York. Let’s say that it puts the blue in his collar and sticks his feet to the ground. Paul’s music seems to embody the unexpected overlap of The Band’s Americana, Ian MacKaye's unhinged emotion, Otis Redding’s raw soul, and the doo-wop melodies his father, Bill Schalda Sr. (a member of Brooklyn vocal group, The Montereys) raised him on. His sophomore album is produced by long time collaborator and old friend Tommy Brenneck and Big Crown’s own Leon Michels. For the people who are already fans of Paul’s debut ‘Our Love In Light,’ the growth and maturity will be impossible to miss.

Field Medic - "henna tattoo" - 2019

The Line of Best Fit called "henna tatto" "disarmingly honest" while Paste Magazine said, "...his anxious infatuation is presented as a passing, unadorned outpouring, conflicting thoughts and emotions rushed to paper, then tape, using only the implements Patrick had at hand."

Sci-Fi Romance - "Voices" - 2018
Los Angeles-based alt-folk band Sci-Fi Romance’s new album 'Dreamers & Runaways" expands on the textured blend of folk, Americana, punk, and metal influences the band has showcased on its previous releases. It is also the record where the social consciousness that has run beneath the surface of much of the band’s work takes center stage.

American Pleasure Club - i blew on a dandelion and the whole world disappeared - 2017
DT BR Upon hearing the rippling nylon-string cascades that open this album, coloured by the traditions of romantic and blues music, I am dismayed to conclude that not only is Sam Ray a versatile and eclectic composer and producer across a range of electronics-adjacent genres, he is also a strong songwriter and gun guitarist. It doesn't seem right for so much talent to intersect in a single being. I try to console myself with the fact that his singing isn't as effortlessly confident as other areas, but have to admit that his untrained vocal performance has an immediacy that, rather than detract from it, throws the beauty of the melodies into even sharper relief. Bitterly I console myself by listening to this beautiful record a second time through, and imagining that Sam Ray is a terrible dancer.

Belle-Skinner - We Shut Our Eyes - 2017
Belle-Skinner is an indie-folk artist from upstate NY who writes about weird dreams, mermaids, werewolves, deserted landscapes, and ephemeral creatures.
Kind of like a cross between Joni, Sufjan, Francoise Hardy, Lana Del Rey, and Angel Olsen - she mixes mid-century pop with fingerstyle contemporary folk, and then makes you cry

Robin Mitchell - Another Fragile Year - 2015
For Robin Mitchell, Christmas has never meant glib cantations about jingle bells and reindeer. Robin's 'festive fireside songs' conjour up intimacy and warmth, but hold these in tension with the apocalyptic themes that pervade the Christmas story, as well as the sense of vulnerability that accompanies each new winter.
'Another Fragile Year' explores festive themes as Robin understands them: contrasts between light and dark, cold and warmth, despair and hope, love and loss. The songs reflect upon events from the year including travels in China, Robin's marriage to Hannah, and the refugee crisis in Europe.
At times musically haunting, at others warm and jazzy, this record reveals Robin's maturation as a composer and songwriter, with gentle touches of clarinet, reed organ and electric piano enriching an already diverse palette.

Hardworker - The Awful Rowing EP - 2015
Sus Long left Oakland, CA in 2013 (and duo Kit Carson, a collaboration with Ian James Walters) to move to Durham. That same year, she met bass and banjo player Michael Conner and the two started meeting up to play Ramones covers. The friends kept making friends with musical friends and this bluesy folk band has grown to include guitarist Danny Nowell, singer Alex Treyz, and drummer Dave Berka.
This is the first EP from Sus Long and Hardworker. It's got a lot of words and notes, but it turns out that an album is mostly made out of dazzling goodwill and cheering friends and courageous bandmates and the kindness of strange, strange, strangers.

Seamus Fogarty - Ducks and Drakes - 2015
pre-order
Seamus Fogarty’s soul-stirring blend of alt-folk, country, blues and electronica – performed by Seamus himself on a variety of instruments against a background of fragmented recordings and found sounds, from broken household appliances to snippets of random conversations with friends and neighbours – is like nothing else in contemporary music: an intriguingly uneasy handshake between the ancient and the modern. Where God Damn You Mountain – recently hailed by Mercury Prize-nominated artist Jon Hopkins as “a shambolic masterpiece” in an interview with Mojo – was recorded in a cottage in the West of Ireland where he grew up, the Ducks & Drakes EP took shape in his adopted home of London. “The album was kind of me looking back where as these tunes are more about where I am now and how I got here,” says Seamus. “I’m from the country but soon I’ll have spent most of my life living in cities. Fields and rivers have been replaced by parks, ponds and the tube but I don’t think I’ll ever fully adjust to city life, and that’s fine with me. That’s probably why I fill songs with samples of various friends and neighbours I grew up with, to remind myself of where I come from, who I’ve met and where I’ve been.”

Faux Fawn - Lonesome Loon - 2014
Following the success of their 2013 EP Prairie du Chien; Faux Fawn has returned with a new LP titled Lonesome Loon.
Admittedly darker and more reflective; this collection of songs takes the listener through a starless night, led only by the warm glow of Otteson and his band. Though slower paced than previous efforts, Lonesome Loon takes thoughtful steps drenched in lush harmonies and foreboding instrumentation.
