Monuments and Statues, based in Kingston, ON, combine traditional folk/classical instrumentation with quirky songwriting to produce an eclectic yet familiar hybrid-genre sound. Many of M&S's songs center on compelling multi-vocal harmonization with banjo/cello lines in both supporting and featured roles, fleshed out by a revolving door of accompanying instrumentation and rhythmic variety.
Banjo anchors “Red Dress,” with animated cello and vocals alternately assuming lead status. M&S’s overall sound owes much of its influence to vintage Mother Mother, Sufjan Stevens, romantic era classical music, and Simon and Garfunkel.
