John Frum Cargo Cult • Sing Sing • 2024

On Tanna island in Vanuatu people believe in a mythical man called John Frum (possibly a corruption of 'from' since he was reputed to be from Amercia) who appeared in 1937. He told the islanders that they should abandoned Western habits including money, western education and Christianity, and go back to their old traditions, living by their 'kastom' (Pidgin English for 'custom'). In exchange for this they would receive 'cargo', or wealth and prosperity. Every day in Lamakara village, followers of the cult raise an American flag which symbolises the power and material wealth which they see as still being monopolised by Westerners.

Cargo cults are religious practices in Melanesia, the Pacific region stretching from Fiji in the East to Papua New Guinea in the West, which focus on obtaining the 'cargo' (or material wealth) from the Western World through magic, religious rituals and practices. Cargo cult followers believe that their ancestors bequeathed them the cargo but crafty westerners took possession of it and deprived them of their inheritance. At the beginning of the 20th century, cargo cult devotees were constructing big wooden aircraft, landing strips and bamboo control towers, duplicating some of 'white man's rituals' in the hope they would attract real airplanes with cargo to the island. Nowadays these traditions have declined but older followers of some of the cults still remember the good old times when they would imitate the behaviour of American soldiers who came to their islands during the World War.” By @lens_pacific

Best of 2019 • Tinariwen • Amadjar

There is a hazy expansiveness to Tuareg band Tinariwen’s music that recalls the desert setting in which it was created. Fuzzy guitars are rhythmically picked over undulating rhythms and gravelly baritone vocals; it is almost as if you can hear a sand-laden breeze passing between the mics as the band record.

This is a band that has been in existence, in one form or another, since 1979. Never resorting to cliche, they continue to be just as inspired by the universal themes of love, politics and nature as they always have been. Their musical delivery is just as heartfelt and forceful for it.

Walter Gavitt Ferguson • The Legendary Tape Recordings Vol.2 • 2019

„100-year-old Walter Gavitt Ferguson from Costa Rica is a living legend, a Calypsonian of mythical proportions. Rooted like an old tree on the caribbean shore, he has never left his home town to look for fame, instead fame came looking for him. Throughout eight decades his musical gifts have attracted people from near and far, contesting Calypsonians, travellers, musicologists, musicians, pilgrims and the president of the Republic. They once even moved a recording studio to his house, as he refused to go to the city.

Mélissa Laveaux - 'Lè Ma Monte Chwal Mwen' (2018)

‘Lè Ma Monte Chwal Mwen’ is a traditional vodou folk song that Mélissa first heard as a child on Martha Jean-Claude’s album, Canciones de Haiti. “The title of the song means ‘when I’m riding my horse’. In a vodou ceremony, when someone is possessed by a spirit, they are that spirit’s horse and the spirit is riding them. It’s also a reference to how vodou is at times very erotic”, explains Laveaux.

The Polish Ambassador - Color Of Flight - 2017

The Polish Ambassador is raising the bar for what it means to be a professionally touring musician. Porches - Water - 2016

Aaron Maine's Porches follows the release of this year's acclaimed Pool with the Water EP – a new standalone insight into the music that formed the melodic skeleton of Pool, alongside a pair of previously unreleased songs in 'Black Dress' and 'Black Budweiser T-Shirt'. Recorded solo in his adopted home of New York City, the Water EP strips Maine's work down to its core, opening the curtain on his musical metamorphosis from previous releases Slow Dance In The Cosmos and those of his alias, Ronald Paris, into the Porches of today.

Lobo Marino City of Light - 2014

Lobo Marino is a mix of tribal, folk and world music featuring the harmonium, drum and various other unique instruments and voices. At its core it is the musical response to the continuous travels and ongoing spiritual journey of its members.

It all started with a harmonium.
Three years ago we added the harmonium to our band and began to play kirtan, sacred hindu chant music, to honor the instrument's history.
The music had a profound effect on us and our audience.

We wanted to learn more about the ancient songs we were singing so we studied yoga and meditation at an ashram in Virgina called, Yogaville.

Our next journey was to India. We spent a month living in the city of Varanasi, which was once called "Kashi" or "City of Light".
While there we recorded music and chants from the streets, which we have incorporated into this album.
We also volunteered at our friend Ravi's music and arts school, which strives to help children rise out of poverty through music and education.
100% of online sales will go to this school

Sheron - Ghost Hopes - 2013

Sheron is the solo project of Modern Rivals' bassist Andrew Sheron, and - at least from the preview track 'Keyser Söze,' streaming below - it sounds nothing like that band. The instrumentiation alone - featuring an oud, an octave violin, the coke box guitar, tuvan throat singing, a grand piano, and at least half a dozen voices in harmony - speaks volumes of what you can expect from this project. The single blends a rather cerebral Western songwriting style with exotic sounds and arcane sounding arrangements, developing from a verse as intimate as a whisper to a tense finale with tribal percussions and throat singing. The result is a track that sounds at once existentialist and mystical.
