Happiness is Good! a Compilation of Happy Songs [2011]

Genre: Indie Pop / Reggae / Hip Hop / Rock / Alternative

It can be hard to find happiness amongst the indie archives, but with a keen ear and a jovial heart to lead the way, I made the plunge and found a sampling of songs that might just make the darkness turn to a lighter shade of grey.

The Story of Mojave 3 [2011]

Genre: Shoegaze / Indie Folk-Pop

Mojave 3 are a British band, consisting of Neil HalsteadRachel Goswell, Simon Rowe, Alan Forrester, and Ian McCutcheon. Goswell, Halstead and McCutcheon previously played in Thames Valley shoegazing band Slowdive.
The band initially existed as a trio, consisting of Halstead, Goswell, and McCutcheon. After Slowdive were dropped by Creation Records, the trio decided to change musical direction to a dream pop/country rock/folk music style, and were signed by 4AD Records. They took on the new name "Mojave," following a suggestion by Wendy Fonarow, but upon the discovery of another band already using the name, the "3" was added (in reference to the group's three members). Rowe (formerly of Chapterhouse) and Forrester joined shortly after the release of their first album.
Both Halstead and Goswell have released solo albums, also for 4AD.
Despite still being listed as "on hiatus", the band returned to playing live in 2011, including gigs supporting Band of Horses.

The Wet Eyes Series Continues [2011, Volume II]

Teenage Fanclub's Early Story [2011]

Genre: Indie Pop / Rock

"While most bands are lucky to have one great songwriter, Teenage Fanclub are blessed with three, Raymond McGinley, Norman Blake and Gerard Love. "I suppose when you come to make a record, the way that we work, we can't really go off on a tangent because it's three people writing songs; it's not one person's vision," says Norman. "It's song-based, and all that we can do in terms of making it different is look at the way we arrange the songs. So we do try to make it different from album to album..." Also, the way we work after all these years has become intuitive, and you just get a feel for when someone comes in with a song. Gerry'll come in and play a song and outline how he wants it to work, but at that point, he'll give us the freedom to express ourselves in that context."

The Kossoy Sisters (with Erik Darling) - Bowling Green [1956]

Genre: Folk

Identical twins create the most heartfelt folk music ever!

Southern Appalachian Instrumental Music (1957)

Genre: Instrumental Appalachian Music

This album is the result of a folk-song collecting trip made during the Summer of 1956 by Diane Hamilton, Liam Clancy, and Paul Clayton. All of the selections on this recording were recorded in Virginia and North Carolina. Out of considerable instrumental material, these selections were chosen as being most typical and best performed. The instruments represented are the five-string banjo, the guitar, the fiddle, the dulcimer, and the harmonica. These instruments are the ones which have been played for the longest time in the South, end have been handed down traditionally in families.
