ifitbeyourwill S04E03 • Arthur Alligood of phoneswithchords

Ever wondered how a suburban kid from outside Nashville finds his musical path amidst the city's evolving soundscape? Arthur Alligood from phoneswithchords shares his fascinating journey from childhood oldies mixtapes to bedroom pop anthems. Arthur opens up about his mixed feelings toward Nashville's contemporary hits and his love for older country music, sparked by a spontaneous decision to pick up a guitar after quitting basketball. This episode offers an intimate look at how a simple choice can ignite a lifelong passion for creating original music.

Join us as Arthur digs into his creative process, revealing how voice memos on his smartphone capture spontaneous musical ideas that blossom into full-fledged songs. Hear about the magical "gateway song" that sets the thematic course for his latest album, inspired by reflections on time and personal experiences. We also take a lively tour of Nashville's iconic country bar scene, savoring hot chicken and heartfelt moments. This captivating conversation underscores the importance of love, support, and mutual reliance, wrapping up with a touching musical piece that beautifully encapsulates these themes. Don't miss this emotional and insightful episode as we continue to kick off season four!

On his latest release, The Speed of Time (out September 13, 2024 via Totally Real Records), Alligood has truly leveled up. Gorgeous guitar tones, ranging from bright and buzzy to cacophonous and clean, soar through the mix as blown out vocals float effortlessly above. Stark, sparse arrangements give way to intense orchestrations including electronics, strings, and horns – all while wearing the album’s retro influences firmly on its sleeve. This all serves as a venerable vessel for the star of the show: Arthur’s intensely personal and introspective lyrics, which touch on aging, love, and the joy and agony of existing.

Mal Not Bad • No Worries • 2024

Back in November we teased a new release from Mal Not Bad (AKA LA’s Mal Hauser) with the single ‘AP’. A track which “display[ed] a newfound depth within the [project’s] sound,” as we put it, “leaning further into electronic sensibilities while simultaneously interrogating the impact of technology, resulting in a nuanced exploration of the human experience within the digital present.” The album, This Is Your New Life, will be the debut full-length from Mal Not Bad and continues this style, expanding the sonic palette introduced with previous EP Continuous Short Feature Film with a mix of sampled and live instruments and probing to the heart of the contemporary moment.

πŸŽ™️ ifitbeyour will Ep. 15 • Jaguar Sun

One man Canadian band Jaguar Sun is the brainchild of multi instrumentalist Chris Minielly.  His approach to crafting his music is remarkable,  a truly bedroom dream pop kinda guy doing everything from writing, recording, mixing, promoting and playing all his music himself in his home studio. We had a wonderful conversation about how he builds his songs, how his music went viral and what is coming down the line for Jaguar Sun.
🌞 Enjoy πŸŽ™️

Taking inspiration from bands such as STRFKR, Youth Lagoon and Panda Bear, Minielly’s music fuses dreamlike soundscapes with alt-pop. Jaguar Sun boasts a flair for instrumentation, effortlessly balancing layered guitars with synths and vocals - a great example of how his artistic autonomy shines through when making creative decisions. lastFM

Podcast #19 • Clara Engel

There's the end of season 1… Hope you enjoy!

In this season's final podcast, I was joined by singer-songwriter and artist Clara Engel. Clara is a pioneer of minimalist indie folk, with an ever evolving need to reconnect with the natural truth. On Clara's recent record Sanguinaria (blood root) they explore themes of human disconnection from the natural world and an incessant need to reconnect to what's real if we have any hope of a rebirth of humanity to our natural world, beautifully seen by Clara as "The non-human world is awesomely heedless of, and dispassionate towards, human codes of meaning and morality." The spacious instrumentation complements the words is such an ethereal manner throughout the tracks, making it a record that will be on repeat for most. Be sure to check out Clara's massive discography and beautiful artwork πŸ–Ό️

hunter & wolfe • Last Time • 2023

I deserve this., hunter & wolfe's forthcoming 11-track album, was written during sleepless nights about sleepless nights. It is about the self-importance to think you deserve something, and the self-loathing to think what you deserve is nothing good. Vocalist Michael Maffei and guitarist Sundeep Kapur’s message of ennui, lost love, and the paradox of choice in the modern era reflect both a seriousness and the self-awareness to not take themselves too seriously.

“We chose 'King Insignificant' as the opener because it features a few of the vibes found elsewhere on the record, and serves as a sort of overview thematically," Quigley explains. "It's this balancing act between acknowledging the many kindnesses that have been extended to me by people in my life, and this nagging, unshakable self-contempt partly in reaction to that good fortune. It's a sort of bristling at interdependence. Greased by vice and rolling forward."
