Dean Wareham believes Purple Mountains’ “Snow Is Falling in Manhattan” is destined to be a holiday classic. Certainly, that wasn’t David Berman’s intention when writing—on the contrary, the lyrics reveal its real purpose: a farewell. Recorded shortly after Berman’s tragic death, its beautiful, yet sparse production has a solitary feeling to it. Its inclusion on Dean & Britta & Sonic Boom’s A Peace of Us allows us to feel the bittersweet amongst all the holiday cheer.
