Eleanor Friedberger - New View - 2016
Friedberger’s latest album is called New View, and it’s the third she’s released since the dissolution of The Fiery Furnaces, the indie rock band she anchored alongside brother Matthew throughout the ‘00s. It’s not as ambitious or eclectic as Last Summer, an album that leapt from funk to folk to pop-soul and back again, but it’s warm, rambling, and assured. And while much of Friedberger’s best solo work has mined romantic or social anxiety, New View finds her navigating the world with relative ease. That doesn’t mean it’s boring, but it’s consciously minor. the verge

Top Songs of 2014: Andrew Jackson Jihad - Getting Naked, Playing with Guns
AJJ writes the most outrageous lyrics to, at times very sweet acoustic melodies - in this case this is what got my attention with this track in particular off his latest release, Christmas Island. The common "man" speaks in inferences, as he takes on modern twists happening in the 21st century woe. Fairly linear song that is catapulted to new heights with this playfully depressing look at ourselves and our fall from grace.

Top 20 Songs 2014: Hospitality - It's Not Serious
And so it begins for another year. ITBYW will count down some of the top tracks from 2014... This will not be in any kind of order, rather the songs that got frequent plays.
The first post being an early release from 2014, but one I cannot neglect; the distinct voice, the constant bass line, the silence in the right spots make this song a standout.
The process of completing Trouble was, for Hospitality, one of learning to accept silence, to let that empty space exist no matter what it might awaken or evoke. If you listen closely, you can hear a band pushing against their own boundaries and limitations until they find the very air around them subtly but perceptibly changed.

Interpol - El Pintor - 2014
Interpol once seemed like a candidate for a quick post-debut flameout. Its 2002 debut, Turn on the Bright Lights, broke through with seemingly instantaneous intensity, setting the band up for an equally ferocious second-album letdown. So many bands in its fickle New York scene were playing a variation on Interpol's sleek, stylish, darkly driving post-punk that success was bound to be difficult to sustain.
Interpol often tiptoes on the fine line separating consistency from sameness. El Pintor treads that same line, but keeps finding Interpol on its better side. Twelve years after its debut, it's a band that knows what it wants to be — and, just as importantly, knows how to get there every time.

Dean Wareham has been singing and playing guitar in roughly the same winsome way for more than 25 years, first with Galaxie 500, then Luna, then in a duo—the fittingly named Dean & Britta—with his wife, Britta Phillips. Dean Wareham marks his first full-length solo album, and it should come as no surprise that it’s really no surprise at all: Fans of anything he’s done in the past will slide into these nine songs like slippers, cozy and familiar.

Hospitality – Trouble - 2014
Hospitality’s self-titled debut album was a love letter to life in your early twenties – a carefree, cartwheeling attempt to see the good in bad decisions, and only the sweet in bittersweet romance. A few years on, their second LP Trouble doesn’t just feel like an expansion of these themes, but a direct sequel: resigned to the realities of late twenties disappointments, and finding lyrical escapism in empty, imaginary landscapes.
Gone are the colourful bursts of brass flooding the choruses. Gone also are the peppy drum beats elevating acoustica into carnival. Instead, songs like ‘Going Out’ swing their hips on a slow, sultry groove; call and response casually falling down the fretboard, with acres of room around the instruments.
