Advanced Base - Daytrotter Studio [09-12-12]

These Advance Base songs - recorded with Ashworth (electric piano and vocals), Nick Ammerman (autoharp and bass), Edward Crouse (piano and autoharp) and Jody Weinmann (bass, omnichord, organ and vocals) - are extensions of these sentiments, of these drowsy pieces of milieu that we tend to stuff down inside. They are often the pieces of ourselves - not just these characters - that we can't explain too easily, so we don't try. It's a little like Weinmann sings on "Puppy," "My love for you is like a movie script/It doesn't make sense to my friends when I describe it/My love for you is acquired and it's sweet." These are the moments, under pale light, that happen while the television set is the only sound spilling out of a lonely room. These are their accompanying thoughts.

Rabbit Dreams [2012]

Rabbit Dreams - Fighting So Long (Offical Music Video)

Bandcamp

Rabbit Dreams is based in Portland, OR, and consists mainly of Mike Moore and whatever weird figures he can think of to include in his song. Mike was in another Portland band, The Goodwill River, but found himself cranking out some songs that didn't quite fit in with what that band was doing. So, Rabbit Dreams was born. All of the songs are about people in horrible situations just hoping for something a little better. Unfortunately, these people are usually about 2 seconds away from getting what's coming to them, so they're really kind of hosed. Mike really hopes that you like the songs, and please feel free to drop him a line to say hi!

Rainy Day Music [2012]

The past week has given more rain than the past twenty-one. I am damp, dewy, cold, distraught, and a tab mildewy... We need rain, I agree, but in the same token we need light or everything gets a bit sulky. I am sulking right now!

Suburban Living - Cooper's Dream EP [2012]

Suburban Living, otherwise known as Norfolk Virginia’s Wesley Bunch, drops a nifty little five-song collection today that’s affectionately known as “Cooper’s Dream” EP.
This tidy little effort features “echoing vocals, 80’s styled guitar riffs and glimmering synths”. Imagine gliding through the clouds in a silent jetliner, and you’ve got Suburban Living.

Sonnenberg - The End of the Rain [2012]

Sonnenberg is a British folk-type of band around the singer/songwriter Zinney, multi-instrumentalist /songwriter Dave Thom and percussionist/tabla-ist Saul Hughes.
After the release of their debut album Fishing in the Pool the band performed in different formations (2-4-6 piece) in small venues as well as “the Shepherds Bush Theatre” in London and the “Boardwalk” in Sheffield.
The surprise with Sonnenberg is… how directly this unaffected melodic folk-pop goes straight to the listeners. It’s like all happening very close to your beating heart… The governing spirit is indie folk with a twist.. It’s all intimate without being cloying, pleasurably nocturnal and more than a little bit wonderful”

In January 1982, holed up in his spare bedroom with nothing but an acoustic guitar, harmonica, and a 4-track cassette recorder, Bruce Springsteen recorded an American folk masterpiece. Now, 30 years later, a new generation of songwriters pay tribute to 'Nebraska'...

Sun Kil Moon - Mistress [2012]

Mark Kozelek aka Sun Kil Moon performed exclusive web performance of "Mistress."

The weight of expectation can be a terrible thing for a record and I have to say, I am guilty of it as anyone else. Sun Kil Moon's last record Admiral Fell Promises haunted both my dreams and travels of the world. A simple nylon acoustic and voice record, the songs explored unknown territories of longing and loss. At first, the flamenco flourishes almost seemed cheesy but played into part of a greater narrative of each song, twisting and informing ways beyond the lyrics. I love that album and unfortunately Among the Leaves enters my brain with wildly unrealistic expectations based on that record. It is an entirely different album to Admiral Fell Promises and I'd lie if I didn't feel let down by it. This is not saying it isn't a good record, it just isn't the record I wanted and that is an entirely selfish and unreasonable thing but it is a very human thing. But then, this is a very human record with its foibles and inconsistencies laid bare so it feels ok to admit this up front.

Kodaline – The Kodaline EP [2012]

Kodaline are from Dublin and they’re really, really good. The production on the EP is top class, they’re polished without sounding smoothed out or false, they can play and most importantly, they write interesting and original songs. Oh, and the accompanying videos would put most major label, big budget efforts, to shame.

The first track I heard from them before the EP release was Lose Your Mind. It sounds sort of like Spiritualized, but with Muse’s Matt Bellamy’s little brother on vocals. On first listen, it sounded warm and familiar but still something fresh and different. It definitely grows on you the more you listen.

Jodi Shaw - In Waterland [2012]

Jodi Shaw is a Canadian-born poet/performer with a unique voice and vision. Her music has been described as "hauntingly erotic," "mystical" and "hard to pin down." One reviewer, upon hearing her latest release "In Waterland" for the first time, remarked that he was "partially shocked." Another calls the album "a revelation, nothing less than stunning." Her work has drawn comparisons to Feist, Natalie Merchant, Fiona Apple, Imogen Heap, Tori Amos, and the Beach Boys.

James Yorkston [2002]

James Yorkston was the first member of the Fence Collective to emerge from the creative oddity that is the East Neuk of Fife. His first solo show was supporting Bert Jansch, his first tour was supporting John Martyn. After those heady heights he went on to sign to Domino and record his debut album in a damp soaked cottage in the Scottish Borders. Domino subsequently released this record, Moving Up Country, which went on to become Rough Trade’s Album of The Year 2002.

James was invited to play a John Peel Radio 1 session in 2003 (included here on the second disc) and was labelled ‘the finest songwriter of his generation’. He has gone on to forge a career as one of Scotland’s most respected songwriters, releasing 5 further critically acclaimed albums.

This 10th Anniversary Edition of ‘Moving Up Country’, released on Monday the 23rd of April 2012, consists of two discs.  Disc 1 features the original album, now with debut Domino single The Lang Toun; Disc 2 is a collection of ‘Moving Up Country’ demos, including never heard before demos and the aforementioned Peel session originally broadcast on Jan 2nd 2003. The double vinyl edition features all tracks from disc 1 with digital downloads of the bonus tracks.
