ifitbeyourwill S05E01 • Niko Kapetan of Friko

Niko Kapetan of Friko joins us to kick off our fifth season, sharing an incredible journey from the inception of his musical passion to his current creative explorations. Imagine being a child, watching The Beatles' "Love" in Las Vegas, and having that moment light a fire within you—that's where Nico's story begins. Nico talks about his evolution from playing piano and drums to discovering the guitar as a powerful tool for songwriting during his high school days. His collaboration with drummer Bailey Minzenberger marks a significant turn towards a more interactive and collective approach in his recent projects.

We also delve into the emotional rollercoaster that inspired one of Nico's impactful records, highlighting themes of defeat and resilience born from his warehouse work during the pandemic. The heartfelt simplicity of the song "Until I'm with You Again" shines through as a beacon of genuine artistic expression. Nico recounts unforgettable moments from playing festivals like Bonnaroo, performing at a packed Metro in Chicago, and connecting with audiences in Asia, illustrating music's profound power as a universal language. Nico shares his excitement for new music and hints at another album coming in 2025, promising continued growth and artistic exploration.

New Order • Lonesome Tonight Live at The Hacienda • 1983

I walk along the street
I look into your eyes
I'm pleasant when we meet
I'm there when you go home
How many times before
Could you tell I didn't care?
When you turned your back on me
I knew we'd get nowhere
Do you believe in youth
The history of all truth
A heart that's left at home
Becomes a heart of stone

John Prine and Iris DeMent • In Spite of Ourselves • 2018

She don't like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She's my baby, I'm her honey

I'm never gonna let her go
He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen

He's my baby, and I'm his honey
Never gonna let him go

The American Analog Set • The Wait • 2003

On the first day
I was aching
It was okay
If you were faking
It's not worth it
Just don't try
Love so perfect
You just get by
Now it's all day
My hands are shaking
It's on the airwaves
And that news is breaking
It's not worth it
You just don't try
Love so perfect
You just get by
It's not worth it
You just don't try
Through the nineties
We just got by
It's not worth it
You just don't try

ifitbeyourwill S03 E19 • Longwave

Steve Schiltz, the enigmatic force behind Longwave's mesmerizing melodies, navigates the sonic landscape with the finesse of a seasoned voyager. With each chord he strums and every lyric he pens, Schiltz crafts an auditory odyssey that transcends time and space, beckoning listeners into a realm where introspection intertwines with euphoria. His musical prowess, honed over years of dedication, is a testament to the transformative power of artistry.  Longwave just re-released their 20 year old classic, The Strangest Things with a one time show at the Bowery Ballroom. Steve is currently touring with Blue October. Enjoy 🎙️

Longwave formed at the dawn of the New York indie rock resurgence in 1999. The Brooklyn-based band’s first release was the indie distributed Endsongs.

The band then signed to RCA Records where it released the Dave Fridmann-produced The Strangest Things. Longwave followed up with an EP, Life Of The Party, which was produced by Fridmann and future producer of The National, Peter Katis. The band would enlist John Leckie (Radiohead, XTC, and Stone Roses) to helm the production for the full length a There’s A Fire. In 2008 Longwave released Secrets Are Sinister, which Katis produced, through Original Signal Recordings.

best of 2023 • Joanna Sternberg Live at Union Pool

Joanna Sternberg’s music often sounds as though they’re performing a one-person show to an audience of plushies and bedroom clutter. They possess a humble loneliness that is utterly without charm, which of course, somehow, makes their songs helplessly charming. On I’ve Got Me, their second album and their first as a drummer and string arranger, Sternberg balances unvarnished emotion with meticulous craftsmanship. They never offer advice, just a little space for emotion and self-reflection. PF

Podcast #10 • Deer Scout

Dena Miller, the mastermind behind indie folk powerhouse Deer Scout joined me for a chat about her very busy spring, playing solo shows again, growing up with parent musicians and her continuous pursuit of finding her voice. Deer Scout play minimalist DIY folk, where Dena's subtle finger plucking elevates her clean, dreamy vocals to a place that has comfort and beauty, a place where I love to dwell.

Hurray For The Riff Raff • Full Performance (Live on KEXP 2022)

Belle and Sebastian • String Bean Jean (Live on KEXP) • 2022

I got my fingers dirty at the school of rock
Yeah I got my fingers dirty so I took a walk
I went up to the country park and hung around till after dark
Till the girls got home
Till the girls got home

Did I tell you 'bout the one I know, she's on the rag
She spent the summer day inside her sleeping bag
Yeah she spent the summer day inside until it's time to work
And she works all night
Cause the girl's all right

The girls have got a house that's like a caravan
And it's like your holidays whenever you go round
And we always have a laugh and then we all get in the bath
To save on the leccy bill
Me & Jo & Phil'
