GA-20 - Naggin' On My Mind with Charlie Musselwhite & Luther Dickinson - 2019
GA-20 was formed by friends Pat Faherty and Matthew Stubbs in Boston, MA in 2018. The project was born out of their mutual love of heavy traditional Blues, R&B, and Rock & Roll of the late '50s and early '60s. Faherty and Stubbs bonded over legendary artists like Lazy Lester, J.B. Lenoir, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Junior Wells. Feeling a void in current music, the duo have set out to write, record and perform a modern version of this beloved art form. Live, GA-20 is a trio of 2 guitars, vocals and drums. Raw, passionate and honest performance, both on stage and in the studio, is the only goal.

Kid Koala’s Music To Draw To: Satellite is an uncharted musical journey: an expansive work of ambient electronic soundscapes and chilling ballads in collaboration with Icelandic artist Emilíana Torrini. This inaugural volume in the Music To Draw To series is Kid Koala's first non-sample-based record, instead using an array of synthesizers, keys, guitars, strings, turntables, and inventive recording techniques to portray this heartrending musical story about a couple separated by a mission to Mars. The output is over 72 atmospheric minutes of stardust settling like fresh snow over Kid Koala’s trove of turntables and sentiment.

Breanna Barbara - Mirage Dreams - 2016

Frootful - Colours - 2016
Freestyle Records springs into 2011 with the release of the debut album Colours by Frootful, which is the name guitarist Nick Radford records under. The project bridges the gap between past and present, acknowledging influences, while reflecting the creative process of looking back to move forward. Those classic influences include 60s soul-jazz, latin, ska and R&B. Being an accomplished guitarist, Nick also cites players such as Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Boogaloo Joe Jones and BB King as a constant source of inspiration.

yesper - Bigger Animals - 2016
This is the noise that Kevin McNamara and I made as a ghostly tropical blues duo. We recorded the guitar and drums at the same time in our beer-soaked practice space at Crybaby Studios. Our room was beer-soaked because there was a bar above us and when their kegs leaked, it rained beer. The main vocals and Kevin's sweet harmonies were recorded in some of the same empty apartments where Senses Sensei was written.

Food and music, a natural marriage…
Food and music have always gone hand in hand around here in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Musicians work in restaurants and cooks go to the clubs to hear bands after work in equal measure. I remember one night years ago when there was a show we all wanted to see. I don’t remember the band now, but as soon as we got done, a bunch of us line cooks went tearing down the street to the Cat’s Cradle. We still had our aprons on even. The club was crowded and loud, but I could hear a woman beside me say to her friend, “It smells like someone is cooking a steak in here!” Actually, as usual, it was the music that was cooking.
The language of the Blues is especially effective in using the metaphors of food and cooking. It’s both honest and funny. It may seem elemental and primitive at first, but to me, it is great poetry. This marvelously curated collection presents this at its best. Some songs are sexy, some are silly. All are clever. A few, like “Shortnin’ Bread” are familiar, but many were unknown to me. I don’t remember having heard either “Chicken Pie” or “Cabbage Man” before. Both were cool discoveries. There are narratives like “Old Bill” and the wonderful “Lima Beans” will delight both the cook and the poet alike.
Listen to this collection as a whole. The songs of course can each stand on their own but together they have a wonderful feel of working people intelligently and unselfconsciously examining their lives with music. It makes sense that that thing as elemental as food and the table would find their way into song. Play this music when you sit down to dinner. It’s as satisfying as a T-bone steak.

HOO HAs unveil debut single ‘Yankee’ - 2015
Residing in the lesser-trodden crannies of north-east London, freak-rock four-piece HOO HAs draw as much inspiration from Dr Feelgood and JJ Cale as they do Blur, Violent Femmes and JaJa OK. HOO HAs formed when Kent friends Mark (guitar) and Jack (bass) relocated to the capital after stints performing with Liz Neumayr and John Newman respectively. Mark then met Adam (drums) when they both played in Hares, a band formed by ex-Holloways man Rob Skipper, through whom they then discovered singer Jamie at a party (where else?). HOO HAs’ initial collective forays were comical blues jams, from which a more coherent, relevant sound emerged as the quartet focused on each song in its own entity, although their overall style is as distinct, and as earthy, as you’d expect from musicians who cite heroes as disparate as Dylan, Fugazi, Hendrix and Pixies. Add to this Jamie’s deadpan vocal style, which belies his clever off-kilter narratives about the 21st-century experience, and you have a clutch of literate, thrilling songs that at times make you laugh, sometimes make you shudder, but always keep you intensely entertained.

Bug Martin - Penitence - 2014
Penitence is undoubtedly the theme of the album, but unlike most gloomy folky bluesy boys, the sins of Bug Martin are never directly addressed. I’m still not certain why Bug Martin is now Bug Martin and is not Dead Bugs (I’m told it’s a long story, and I’m not told details). There’s something mysterious about Penitence, something buried in the muck of few microphones recording everything all at once that listeners might spend the rest of the calendar trying to uncover. If Bug wanted us to see the deepest color of his blood, he might have included lyrics to the songs on the bandcamp stream of the album, but a lack of words to read leads me to believe his regrets are singular and secret. Perhaps our biggest regret as listeners is losing touch with the profound variety of feelings that all human beings are capable of feeling, losing touch with the truth that sharing those particular, poignant emotions that can be the only thing that bind us together as a species. Or maybe the dude just needs another drink. I think Bug Martin wants you to feel this record more than he wants you to understand it. Take a listen and feel it out for yourself. BBR

The Coppertone - The Bakery - 2014
"Remember why you started".
Those words are pinned on the studio wall next to where Red (Whom for the past 6 years has gone under her stage Moniker, The Coppertone) has sat working on new music. Musician, antique hunter, writer but most of all an artist. Red has undergone some serious changes and as a result has not released any new material since her 2011 EP "Hymns for the Hollow" & has not played a live show in two years. Triumphant from a split with her former label she decided to start ground up which meant patience, perseverance and oddly enough for the amplified songstress, silence.
"My fans helped liberate me to really start again, there are not many chances in life when we are so blessed. I knew I needed to honor them and honor myself. It took a lot strength to stop, sit in that stillness and really process everything that had just happened in order to figure out the next right step forward."
During her hiatus Red wrote over 200 songs.
"The Bakery is an EP. I'm moving into a new place as an artist, I felt I owed it to my fans to release this. It's a celebration what we accomplished together."
She is still working on her next full-length release.
"Everybody progresses, grows, changes… Art has it's own timeline. Right now I am back to work, carefully and passionately putting together my next chapter."
