ifitbeyourwill S06E26 • 54-40

There’s a moment when a band stops trying to prove anything and starts trying to feel again. Porto is that moment for 54-40—a record less interested in declaring relevance than in reclaiming risk. Tracked live in Portugal, cut lean and close to the bone, it sounds like four musicians standing in a circle and daring the songs to blink first.

The story that trails Porto—tiny vintage amps, minimal overdubs, the hum of a Supro against a Gretsch—matters only insofar as it explains the album’s gravity. These songs don’t rush toward resolution. They settle. They hover. They let space do the heavy lifting. That patience feels deliberate, a quiet rebuke to an era that rewards immediacy over resonance.

At the center is Neil Osborne, whose voice has shifted from declaration to observation. The lyrics on Porto often arrive as fragments—sung before they’re written—leaving meaning porous by design. The Jungian framework Osborne has cited (shadow work, descent and return, Dante’s Virgil hovering at the edges) isn’t academic garnish; it’s structural. These songs hold contradiction without ranking it, beauty and ache sharing the same room.

Tracks like “Wail” and “Beautiful All of It” refuse the tidy release of a chorus that explains itself. They work by accumulation—repetition, restraint, the slow confidence of a band that trusts tension more than payoff. It’s the same instinct that once let “I Go Blind” slip sideways into anthem status: an openness that invites listeners to bring their own weather.

What Porto ultimately captures is a band choosing imperfection as method. The songs were road-tested, learned in rooms, sharpened by the kind of danger one gig can teach better than twenty rehearsals. Producer Warren Livesey keeps the frame tight, bottling the immediacy of four players committed to the take you can’t overthink.

Porto doesn’t sound like a comeback. It sounds like continuity rediscovered—longevity understood not as survival, but as tone control. In leaving space, 54-40 make room for us to step in, and the songs linger long after the last chord precisely because they refuse to tell us what to feel.

Sometimes a creative endeavour seems to take on a life of its own, with the artist merely acting as the conduit through which the art finds its way into the world. That was the case when 54-40 began to create its 16th studio album, Porto, with producer Warne Livesey. According to singer-guitarist Neil Osborne, everything just sort of clicked into place. “It seemed like it was writing itself, in terms of the whole making of the album,” Osborne recalls.“Everything was very quick and instant and immediate. And maybe that’s based on our experience of learning how to not overthink things, I don’t know, but it just seemed like there was a wind in our sails right from the get-go, from the lyrics to the music to getting Warne on-board to pre-production.”

FGA • The Space Between Days • 2025

FGA is the sonic brainchild of Freddie Gibbs, a Texas-born artist who has carved a path through raw DIY roots into something both nostalgic and forward-looking. His music carries the DNA of ‘90s alternative rock while injecting enough grit and character to keep it firmly planted in the present. On The Space Between Days, Freddie leans into fuzz-drenched guitars, heavy grooves, and unfiltered emotion, delivering an EP that balances heaviness and melody in equal measure. mrw

Blondshell • Event of a Fire (live at 3voor12 Radio) • 2025

“Event of a Fire” showcases Blondshell at her most cinematic, building from a hushed, intimate guitar arpeggio into a slow-burning epic culminating in a powerful howl. The track, born from tour-induced burnout and inspired by a real 4 a.m. hotel fire evacuation near Boston, layers piercing vocal harmonies over its evolving instrumentation. The accompanying music video, directed by Émile Moutaud and starring French actress Ghjuvanna Benedetti, delves into the internal struggles of a diver, juxtaposing the mundane aspects of her daily life with the weight of her inner turmoil. iinag

The Golden Dregs • Godspeed • 2025

“We’ve been dying to meet you,” Ben Woods sings on “Linoleum”, the second single from Godspeed, album number four for The Golden Dregs. This rousing greeting doubles as a mission statement for the project. What began as a solo endeavour by the then Cornwall-based multi-instrumentalist and producer has grown into a six-member ensemble, each artist deeply rooted in London’s grassroots music scene. On Godspeed, for the first time, each band member contributes individually, but Woods’ songwriting and resonant baritone remain at the core — an anchor welcoming listeners into the fold.

best of 2024 • Hurray for the Riff Raff • Buffalo

Following a performance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Hurray for the Riff Raff has released an official music video for their song “Buffalo.” One of many highlights from The Past Is Still Alive, the 2024 Nonesuch album that Pitchfork just declared one of The Best of the Decade So Far, “Buffalo” is a love song about survival, patience, miracles, and memories of real people and places that bandleader Alynda Segarra (they/them) experienced during trips to New Mexico. In the video, directed by The Past Is Still Alive collaborator Jeff Perlman, Segarra takes over the Field Museum in their brand new home of Chicago, roams alongside a herd of wild buffalo, and shines a light on extinct and endangered species. none

To the uninitiated Cracker might seem to be just another 90s alternative rock band. However, fans recognize that the band is much more than that, having skillfully explored a wide array of styles over nearly 35 years.Regrettably, when newcomers hear a Cracker song and wish to learn more about the band, they often start with algorithmic streaming playlists. These playlists are typically limited to the dozen or so tracks with the most streams. As a result, these playlists are dominated by a few albums from the early 1990s, the heyday of alternative rock radio. There are also a few “greatest hits” compilations for Cracker available, but these at best cover only the first third of the band’s 35-year career. Both of these sources overlook some of the band’s most critically acclaimed and fan-favorite work. read more

Some touches of the Cure peak through, but the Black Watch sounds more drawn toward New Zealand or Australia (The Go-Betweens make a reliable reference point)” - Dusted Magazine - dustedmagazine.tumblr.com

Cuff The Duke • Ballad of the Breaking Dawn • 2024

With a foundation in Canadian roots rock and a penchant for crafting noisy guitar jams, Cuff the Duke's unique blend of genres has consistently escaped the confines of simple classification, earning them an honoured place under the umbrella of "alternative.”

Six albums, a pair of JUNO nods, countless miles clocked on the road, including sharing stages with iconic acts like Blue Rodeo, Hayden, Sloan, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, and Calexico. Then, poof! A ten-year vanishing act, playing only a handful of shows in that time. But like all great tales, theirs has a twist: Cuff the Duke has reemerged from the shadows.

The band's comeback album, "Breaking Dawn" is a deeply personal exploration of frontman Wayne Petti's journey with mental health. Petti, who has spent the past 8 years working as an artist manager for renowned acts like The National, Owen Pallett, Broken Social Scene, and Jennifer Castle, found himself struggling with the idea of balancing his roles as both a manager and an artist.  "I struggled with the idea of working with incredible and inspiring artists in that capacity and still being an artist in my own way. I finally realized that the only thing stopping me was ME. There are no rules about how one can and cannot be creative. I realized that it didn't matter to me how it came out and who listened to it; all that mattered was that I allowed myself to create something just because I finally felt that I needed to.”

ifitbeyourwill S03 E19 • Longwave

Steve Schiltz, the enigmatic force behind Longwave's mesmerizing melodies, navigates the sonic landscape with the finesse of a seasoned voyager. With each chord he strums and every lyric he pens, Schiltz crafts an auditory odyssey that transcends time and space, beckoning listeners into a realm where introspection intertwines with euphoria. His musical prowess, honed over years of dedication, is a testament to the transformative power of artistry.  Longwave just re-released their 20 year old classic, The Strangest Things with a one time show at the Bowery Ballroom. Steve is currently touring with Blue October. Enjoy 🎙️

Longwave formed at the dawn of the New York indie rock resurgence in 1999. The Brooklyn-based band’s first release was the indie distributed Endsongs.

The band then signed to RCA Records where it released the Dave Fridmann-produced The Strangest Things. Longwave followed up with an EP, Life Of The Party, which was produced by Fridmann and future producer of The National, Peter Katis. The band would enlist John Leckie (Radiohead, XTC, and Stone Roses) to helm the production for the full length a There’s A Fire. In 2008 Longwave released Secrets Are Sinister, which Katis produced, through Original Signal Recordings.

Hurray for the Riff Raff • Snake Plant • 2024

“I’ve only had this experience a couple of times, where a song falls on me — it’s all there, and I don’t do anything,” Segarra said in a statement. “Writing ‘Colossus Of Roads’ felt like creating a space where all us outsiders can be safe together. That doesn’t exist, but it exists in our minds, and it exists in this song — this one is sacred to me. I’ve also always wanted to make my version of Bob Dylan’s ‘I Was Young When I Left Home,’ and ‘Snake Plant (The Past Is Still Alive)’ is it.”

Lily Seabird • “Waste” • 2024

"'Waste' finds Seabird inhabiting a sprawling, expansive mode, building from a meditative opening into a searing finale, complete with squalling guitars and thundering drums. Even in the subdued opening minutes, Seabird commands attention with a voice that strains and aches, backed by instrumentation full of discordant and disquieting textures."
Under the Radar

"...The bar for good indie-country-rock has been raised yet again."
Rosy Overdrive

"Music like this doesn’t just come and go after four minutes’ time. Seabird’s words linger on the air, her warm, wistful guitars and fragile voice haunting our memories like an intimate, ever-present shadow."

Zack Keim • Better Days • 2023

"Led by up-tempo rhythms and vintage six-string textures, the track showcases the Keim’s sonic complexity managing to leap into a new era while still harkening back to his garage-rock roots."
- EARMILK

"'Canyon' is as perfect a pop song as it’s possible to conjure up. From the whistle that kicks the song off, it’s simple and stripped-down, seemingly effortless, joyous and yet steeped in a kind of bittersweet nostalgia. Imagine the best pop hooks Lou Reed or Jonathan Richman ever managed overlaid with Zack’s singular, plaintive voice and you’re close."
- Shindig! Magazine

"Opening with a pounding percussive stomp followed by joyous layers of jangling guitar and buoyant melodies, 'Alice' feels both heartfelt and endlessly charming, crafting jangly folk pop with lush complexity."
- Under The Radar

Now Keim returns with the standalone single “Better Days,” a wistful gem that wrests melodic bliss out of pangs of nostalgia. With its sunkissed harmonies and tumbling rhythms, the tune is charged with exuberance and longing for the past. Keim co-wrote the tune with indie singer-songwriter Matt Costa in California; references to palm trees, prophets, and the parking lot heighten the song’s West Coast origins.

PACKS • Brown Eyes • 2023

"Take the Cake is the sound of classic indie rock, as delivered by a promising new voice."
Bandcamp

"Madeline Link sings with her jaw half-clenched half the time, as calculatedly laconic as Steven Malkmus...a witty and intriguing lyricist and Take The Cake has plenty of risky moments."
FADER

"A force to be reckoned with; PACKS are reinventing the slacker soundtrack."
So Young

"Scruffy and bright lo-fi indie rock...joyously off-the-cuff."

Night Shop • "Let Me Let It Go" • 2022

"'For a While' is a gem of sanguine songwriting, showing even while surrounded by some of the best singer/songwriters in indie rock, Sullivan is a standout talent of his own.
- Under the Radar

"'For A While' takes reflective turns around letting go and restarting, delicately moving around [its] lyrics."
- American Songwriter

"With its infectious, self-perpetuating rhythm, the song acts as a kind of thesis for the album. A statement held aloft to ward off the darker corners encountered along the way."
- Various Small Flames

"'Forever Night' is a retro rock that takes inspiration from the past but gives it an energetic modern boost that feels like a mix of early Kevin Morby with a bit of a raw Strokes element."
- We All Want Someone to Shout For

Today, Night Shop (the solo project of Justin Sullivan, who is best known for playing drums for Kevin Morby, in addition to playing with Flat Worms and The Babies) shares a brand new single and music video, "Let Me Let It Go." Jasmyn • "Find The Light" • 2021

Branching out on her own, it’s the first single from her new project Jasmyn, a shuffling, driving banger  that is being released by both Royal Mountain and ANTI- Records. A repetitive synth line is backed by an ever-present tambourine and some really powerful guitars, with Jasmyn’s unique and vibrant vocals sitting front and centre. Coupled with an excellent video featuring a ton of drone shots of multiple Jasmyn’s (what an array of wigs!), it’s such an exciting introduction to her new work and it’d be awesome if you were up for sharing it. I have the video and press release below with a little more information, and as always please let me know if you have any more questions or need anything else from me.

Adam Hattaway and The Haunters • Riding the River • 2021

Adam Hattaway & The Haunters are steeped in the sound of American rock n' roll from the 60s and 70s. They update classic motifs for modern audiences and "Keep Walking" is a testament to that. In an endearing performance video, leader Adam Hattaway tells a tale of longing through raw, emotive vocals, engulfed by twangy guitars and classic Americana riffs. The warm strings of a fiddle is brought by musician Flora Knight. This track, along with the rest of their upcoming double album 'Rooster' due out November 19th, was entirely recorded on a 4-track tape in true classic rock style, highlighting the gritty DIY nature of the music.
