14. POOMA – Under The Trees

Only a couple of years back one could come up with plenty of clichés about Scandinavian music. Well, some people might still do. Yes, it’s all quite moody and melancholic; undeniable gloomy. And if not the other extremes are surely metal and charts pop in the finest tradition of ROXETTE and ABBA. But of course you do know better than this. Quite obviously the current music scene of the Nordic countries has far more to offer than outmoded stereotypes. Other than that you can spot a broad range of genres, artists and musical ideas when you focus your view on Europe’s north. And more and more the rest of the world seems to notice what’s going on in this musical microcosm. England might be the home country of pop music in terms of historical relevance but the Scandinavian countries are currently the place to look first when it comes to exciting new artists and a diversified selection of high quality music from various fields. nbhap

Yellow Submarine Resurfaces (2012)

The latest free CD issue from the July, 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine is a tribute to the re-release of the Yellow Submarine DVD and song soundtrack. There are some interesting covers here, especially some of George Harrison’s lost wonders, “It’s All Too Much,” “Only A Northern Song” and “Love You To.” I like Jim White’s “All Together Now,” but only because I already liked his bizarre style. The Cornshed Sisters, who recorded a vocally robust Beach Boys bonus cover for last month’s MOJO, tackle “Nowhere Man” here. Check out the twisted cover of George‘s psych rock epic, “It’s All Too Much,” below. WW

Track List:
BILL WELLS & AIDEN MOFFAT Yellow Submarine
BEVIS FROND Hey Bulldog
HOWE GELB Eleanor Rigby
CORNERSHOP Love You To
JIM WHITE All Together Now

Electricity - A Brief History of Future Sound [2012]

The latest free CD from the September, 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine is a tribute to electronica, entitled Electricity – A Brief History Of Future Sound. I like a few of these bands myself (CAN, Throbbing Gristle) but don’t really listen to this type of music much. It’s why the player hosts what might be the least representative track. Fans of the genre will know if this collection is worthy or not.

FAD GADGET Back To Nature (5:46)
THROBBING GRISTLE Hamburger Lady (4:07)
CAN Oh Yeah (7:20)
PLASTIKMAN Spastick (9:16)
