Mamas Gun • Good Love • 2022

“... a modern soul classic with a deeply funky groove. Supremely mellow and smooth... feels vibrantly fresh while maintaining a slinky soul vibe that takes you straight back to the more moody and sensual sounds of the ‘70s when acts like Curtis Mayfield and Parliament Funkadelic were dominating the landscape. ” - GLIDE MAGAZINE

Son Little • "suffer" • 2020

Born to a preacher and a teacher in Los Angeles, Little first came to international prominence with his self-titled debut, released in 2015 on ANTI- Records. While Little’s collaborations with The Roots and RJD2 had already helped him make a name for himself by that point in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia, critics on both sides of the pond were quick to recognize the unique power of Little’s solo recordings.

Son Little, the bluesy R&B project of Grammy-winning Los Angeles artist Aaron Livingston, has shared his third album aloha. It’s his first album with an outside producer, and Livingston plays almost all the instruments on the album. aloha follows 2017’s New Magic and 2015’s Son Little. —Lizzie Manno

Yola • Ride Out In The Country • 2019

Walk Through Fire takes its name from a devastating house fire, which left Yola injured and shaken. It also references her survival of an abusive relationship, which took its toll on Yola's emotional well-being. To help herself heal, she wrote songs that touch on both of these incidents and offer ways forward. (In the title track, she references a "rescue vessel" she's certain will take her to calmer shores.) The resulting album is a bold statement from a woman who's been to hell and back, and is ready to share her stories.

Breanna Barbara - Mirage Dreams - 2016

"If you dig Alabama Shakes, there’s a good chance you’ll dig this too," says Brooklyn Vegan about Breanna Barbara, and for good reasons, her new album 'Mirage Dreams' was recorded and produced by their collaborator Andrija Tokic, who also worked with Hurray For The Riff Raff, "it’s swaggering, smoky blues rock, with fuzzed-out riffs, organs, and Breanna’s attitude-fueled voice leading the way."

Still Flyin' - Perfect Future - 2016

Still Flyin’ are a silly, dumb blast of a bash worth attending.” – NME

WWNBB is excited to team up with Ernest Jenning Record Co. and Lost and Lonesome to announce Perfect Future, the fourth album from San Francisco’s Still Flyin‘.
Still Flyin’s Sean Rawls had a child at the end of 2012, a few months after their most recent album (On A Bedroom Wall) was released, which spelled a day job and no more world tours. In his words, “My identity as ‘dude in a band’ turned into ‘new dad who used to be in a band.'” Once an endless tinkerer who crafted songs constantly, he suddenly found himself with little time for any of that. He ended up having to carve out songwriting time between his son’s naps, and one of these short bursts of songwriting resulted in three of Perfect Future‘s tracks (“Get Out of My Car”, “Navarone” and “Tea Leaves”).
The band ended up recording in much the same way — all of the basic tracks were bashed out in three days of recording, which was much quicker than they were used to. Keeping with the general theme, the record was mixed very quickly by Phil Manley (Trans Am), and the result is raw, immediate, unedited and undeniably fun. wwnbb

Guy Fox - Night Owl - 2015

It’s not born out of decades of psych-rock, surf-rock or even folk, but lies at the very foundation of Bay Area music—soul and funk. Punctuating brass, playful bass lines, and even funk-pop make its way into a musical aesthetic found at the fingertips of Guy Fox.

PHOX - 2014

One of the most prominently unifying fixtures of PHOX comes from deep in the soul of frontwoman Monica Martin. Her smoky voice serves as both the constant throughout PHOX and the motion that pushes songs in new directions. The almost a capella opener “Calico Man” focuses the attention on her, while on tracks like lead single “1936,” her layered harmonies weave into the greater instrumental collage. Although some tracks may blend together on initial listen, PHOX ultimately serves as a colorful debut from a promising young band.

Pwrhaus - Be Free - 2014

With a flair for the epic and an ear cupped toward the sentimentality of ’50s rock ‘n’ soul, Portland’s PWRHAUS have claimed their very own creative corner. At eight members strong, the sheer size of the band is imposing; their capacity for capturing moods within strong songwriting that utilizes chamber and baroque sensibilities is a bit of an anomaly for the bar/club set, but the band has steadily transcended their outsider status to bigger stages, including a fantastic set at last year’s PDX Pop Now! The band’s new self-titled record is a fantastic, dream-like undertaking, melding the velvety vocals of frontman/guitarist/pianist Tonality Star with a wall of foggy, mildly dark instrumentation. There probably isn’t one bad song on the record, and in the live setting, the band’s attention to the same intricacies it hones in the studio remains present. That translates to good, good things.
