ifitbeyourwill Podcast #171 • The Leaf Library

The Leaf Library Have Been Right This Whole Time

Six years is a long time to believe in something. Matt, the engine behind The Leaf Library, will tell you it requires a specific kind of delusion — the ability to convince yourself, and eventually everyone around you, that the record you're making is worth the time, the money, and the slow erosion of certainty. After the Rain, Strange Seeds is proof that the delusion held.

The band's fourth album landed on Fika Records this past March, and it sounds like exactly what it is: decades of instinct refined into something weightless. Dream pop that leans pastoral, folk textures dissolving into lo-fi haze, Kate's vocals sitting just above the mix like something half-remembered. It's the kind of record that doesn't announce itself — it accumulates.

In this conversation, Matt traces the long road here: a Stereolab ad in Reading, a John Peel spin, a DIY infrastructure that taught him more about music than any lesson could. He talks about the band's finally-settled lineup, the collaborative friendship with Kate that stretches back to 1996, and a forthcoming project built around drones traded with Japanese artist Teriyuki Kurohara. He's thoughtful, self-deprecating, and quietly certain that this one cut through for a reason.

He's right. Go listen.

Soap&Skin • The End • 2024

The single is taken from the first Soap&Skin cover album TORSO, which will be released on November 22 via Play It Again Sam. It follows the latest release of "Girl Loves Me", which was released in October along with a stunning video. Following her viral mega-success with "Me + the devil" (230k TikTok Creations / 200 million streams), her music is currently listened to by over 5 million people every month.

Anja says that she sometimes hears a song and has the feeling that there is something in it that she would like to add. From then on, she no longer listens to the original version, sometimes not for years. She records the songs from memory. For example, she hasn't listened to the original by The Doors for over seven years, an old favorite song that is like a little time capsule for her.

One listen to ‘Fairground’ and I was obsessed; I met them and signed them within a couple of weeks and a few months later ‘Fairground’ became their debut single. Initially released in January, it was remixed by Saint Etienne and – when it finally appeared in physical form – went straight to Number One in the Official Charts’ vinyl singles chart.

Vines • main street • 2023

On Birthday Party, Brooklyn-based composer Cassie Wieland (aka Vines) braids poignant, rich instrumentals with sparing lyrics. It’s a new, deeply personal direction for the composer, whose previous music was primarily written for others to play. Here, her own voice, diffused by the feathery touch of a vocoder, is front and center; her economical words stem from the loneliness you might feel on your birthday, where long gone memories and nostalgia feel their most acute. From these thoughts, Wieland weaves lush, contemplative tapestries, finding catharsis in fuzzed-out melodies.

Cedric Noel • Allies • 2021

The newest longplayer from Montreal staple Cedric Noel lands with a stunning sense of surety and self. Hang Time stands as a high water mark for a songwriter who's spent the past decade quietly expanding the borders of his music. Longtime fans will recognize the fluid elements of the album’s open-ended rock formations: reflective strumming, soaring choruses, searing guitar lines, subtle bass grooves; all occasionally dissolving into pools of pure ambience. New listeners will find surprises throughout: threads of folk pop, ambient and sound collage fasten the foundations of this expressive whole. However, what’s most striking on his eighth album is Noel’s newfound sense of voice, both literal and metaphorical.

MARK GARDENER • CHAINED • 2020

Promo image

Now that shoegaze kingpins Ride are in touring limbo, frontman Mark Gardener has been busy with recording, production, mixing and mastering work at his OX4 Sound Studio. He has also released a new single, called 'Chained', for which he collaborated with 2Square, a.k.a. Stephan Haeri of France's Telepopmusik.

This song comes from a deep space, as Gardener eluciates on a past attempt to face, beat and get away from some personal demons and unhealthy situations and temptations. The accompanying video, commissioned by Gardener, was produced and directed by Dariy Karyakin over the past month.

“For me Myopia is an album about trust and doubt. Can you trust yourself or not?
Can you trust your own judgments? Can you trust that you will do the right thing?
Can you trust your instincts and what you are feeling? Or are your feelings skewed?”

Atlas Clouds • Sirens • 2019

Atlas Clouds has been inspired by the likes of Nick Cave, Depeche Mode and the Young Gods (in their quiet moments). Spherical synth sounds accompany the thoughtful singing in «Sirens», the new single of Atlas Clouds. Musician, singer and multi-instrumentalist Christoph Meier, who actually is Atlas Clouds, invites you to music that is charming in its beauty.
